Andretti
I downloaded a video today, it was a race in which Mario Andretti in about 1990 or 91 ran into the back of a rescue truck and then his Newman-Haas team-mate ran into the back of a stationry car the rescue truck was treating to
Does anyone know the one i'm on about? |

I think this is it: http://tbk.fameflame.dk/videos/Open_Wheel/crash779.mpg
It is kind of funny...yet the announcers discuss it as if this is normal. I'm not sure what the situation was though...maybe someone else can help this... |

Yeah, I remember this well. Detroit in 1992 (I think). Both Andretti's were out in the same incident. One hit the truck under the yellow while the other was being picked up on the hook. I think it was Michael that actually hit the truck, a really bizzarre incident.

I remember this accident too. He came in a little too fast and lost front traction on the oilsorb placed on the track. I also remember him being very embarrassed by it. As the next car comes though and swerves away and then the second Newman-Haas car crashes into the stranded car its easy to see how tough that corner was to negotiate.

I remember watching that race live and there was no excuse for both Andrettis to run into the safety truck. They were the only cars that were ignoring the yellow and not slowing. All the rest of the field lowered their speed and got through the turn safely.
This incident was the main reason that CART started the full course yellow when safety vehicles were on the course. |

When you consider that Mikey had the same problem (running up the bootlids of people) in 6 of his 10 races in F1, I see some kind of trend here....
I've watched Mario race since he raced on the dirt tracks, and my Dad (who used to race stock cars) still snorts at the myth of the "Andretti luck." Both men drive the wheels off their cars, except Mario generally didn't run up the bootlids of other drivers too. Not that it isn't wonderful fun to watch Mario race, even today! |
