Hi. I raced one in the mid 90s.
I can't remember the exact rear spring rates, but they were huge compared to the front. 600lbs plus 'springs' to mind....... The key is to get the back rock solid to lift an inside wheel and get it to oversteer to cancel out the understeer. However, if rear anti roll bars are now allowed that will have the same effect. If they are not, there were ways and means of stiffening the rear beam to similar effect depending on rule interpretation. Pressures. I ran during the 90s on Fulda road tyres at around 32psi all round as a base, but they are on slicks now. |

Is it on Dunlops or Fuldas?? ie Irish or UK??
Irish cars run almost exclusively on Leda shocks with spring poundage around 500-600 front and anything from 750 upwards on the rear. Some guys have gone well over 1000lbs, but the car tends to hop on slow corners if the back is too stiff. Also, The Irish Unos (www.fiatracing.ie) do almost all their racing at Mondello, which is full of second gear corners, hence the need to kill understeer. This set-up might be a bit of a handfull (to say the least) at a quicker track............. |

Most Irish Unos use the 55 gearbox but the most popular final drive is the 4.1 as opposed to the 3.9)
And the bro did well on Sunday in Anglsey............. |

My 127 wasn't ever 'set up' as such........
The front springs were rear springs off a 1983 Vauxhall Carlton, cut down, chosen purely because they were sitting in the garage and seemed stiff...... The rear transverse leaf spring was lowered using a wooden block wedged between the spring and the floorpan. After two seasons, woodworm set in and it was replaced by a metal block. The uprated leaf off the van was sourced too. We managed to get the inside rear wheels to lift off the ground by running a very long bolt from the inside of the wheelarch to underneath the rear arms to limit droop....... Very technical,I'm sure you will agree........but it did win races!! |

Brilliant! I love those kind of setups.. I was expecting spring poundage, corner weights etc!!!!
My 127 seems to have an eerily similar setup with various "inventive" ways to stop the back suspension from working. I've only driven it once but the people watching could be excused for thinking it was rwd!!! |
