croftmarshal should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
fight fight fight!!!!!!

Hey all, for those of you who missed the fight on post 18 at croft this weekend, I have looked at motors tv and they are doing a re run of the days events at croft tomorrow morning, ie, tuesday. starting from 7 am. the race with the fight in, I am pretty sure is race two, form renaults. thats on at 9 am tomorrow morning.

My fellow marshal, mr roy walker, (not the irish catchphrase guy) broke the fight up and was all caught live on tv.

Im the one pushing the back wheel wearing the brown cowboy hat and glasses.

enjoy!

Yes, watched it live on TV, was very well handled by all concerned.

BUT then I watched the TV pitlane commentator gets the two persons involved together in the pitlane 2 minutes later and ask them to describe their view from their perspective. Standing just 2 feet apart, I could quite easily see things re-starting live on camera.

KNOWING there had been fisticuffs already, shouldn't there have been kept apart for longer, and is it right for commentators to get sensationalist viewpoints when you know it is going to the CoC anyway?

I've always wondered, do you guys get any training on how to handle drivers when they get out of the car?

Obviously the most of the training is involved around your saftey and safely recovering any incedent. But knowing as a driver the feelings that you go through when you car stops out of the circuit through failure or a mistake on your own, I can only imagine what it would be like it i'd been punted off and the other guy was stood there

I imagine it must be very difficult to handle a couple of guys in this situation as they get out of the cars close together.. adrenalin has a very strange effect on the body !!!! and without some carefull guidance i imagine things can easily get out of hand putting everyone in danger.

cheers

Graham,

The topic of "adreline-fuelled" drivers who have just broken down / crashed / been nurfed etc. is raised at training days. It is also mentioned in the daily breifing if their is a potential for trouble, such as a past history between specific individuals. We are told to have firm but diplomatic approach, not to make physical contact with the drivres if at all possible and certainly NOT to comment on whose fault it was. We will separate warring drivers if necessary and it's safe to do so but usually a marshal will be assigned to shepard each one and we try to keep the fight from happening in the first place.

Proffesional as always, It must be difficult to handle when it thankfully rarely happens..

I did see an amusing incident at Lydden once, an Mx5 was nerfed into the barrier and rolled going up the hill. the race was red flagged, and unfortunetly the car that caused the incedent completed most of the next lap and ended up the first car in the queue stopped on the road right by the rolled car.

once the guy emerged from his upsidedown car the first thing he saw when his eyes focused was the car that nerfed him. you can imagine the rest... especially funny as the incedent instigator ( it was a blatant move) was strapped in to his open top car and couldnt get away when the other chap wanderd over for a chat... He was however carefully escorted away to the ambulance by a couple of marshalls ..

Stevey and all at Croft

watched the whole day on motors and what a load of professional efficient marshalling, the crew at the 1st corner with the snatch wagon were on the ball and i disagree with what the motors commentators were saying about it being not safe to snatch under yellows, there was waved yellows down the start finish straight and vigorous waved yellows at the incident so any drivers should have seen the snatch. and slowed down considerably

must have been hard graft in that heat as well, did Mr Gow buy you all a beer........................................thought not :-)

thanks to all, racing was good aswell :-)

That was funny wasn't it? He was escorted away but soon went back for another go! He also did the classic "glove throw" and the soon to be regretted (and expensive) "helmet chuck"

The Minis at Croix last year also had a "helmet chuck" incident but iirc that was thrown at a car on circuit

am I correct in thinking that a "glove throw" is ok (and cheap) but a helmet throw is a trip to see the CoC and a new helmet

I will admit to throwing my gloves at my car at croix in qualifying when I ran out of fuel.... just after pitting to ask the pit crew why it was miss-firing.." ITs fine just go back out they said"

Yep, the "glove throw" is relatively harmless, the "helmet chuck" however is an impressive sight to behold - the driver raises the helmet high above his head and then slams it into the ground (as if spiking the ball after scoring a touchdown in American football). Even better is the look on their face when they realise how much that little tantrum has cost them "That's your crash helmet is it? Righto, I'll just be cutting that chin strap then"

NO!!!!! The helmet should be taken from the driver & handed to the course car driver or some such, who will take it to the scrutineers for action.

......and if I hadn't heard the visor rattle when the helmet landed I might just have believed him when he said he threw his gloves but not his helmet.....then again, maybe not!

They almost took each other off at post 16 the previous lap so it came as no surprise that they tangled at the hairpin, pity we could not see the tantrum from where we were, but well done to the guys on 18

We could see it from Tower (P8), the speed that the guy jumped out of the car to confront the other was very impressive, but I think he forgot to put the steering wheel back on

Well dealt with P18 & P19

I love the way when it comes to handbags at dawn they ALWAYS leave their helmets on and start hand slapping each other around the helmet like as if thats gonna hurt. I recon they should have a little boxing ring set up where they can go and slug it out if they feel like it after they have calmed down but without helmets!

due to the fisticuffs part of the incident........we did make our initial reports to nick clarke, our obby. What a fine job he did too I must add.
I saw the re run at 9 am this morning and my my, what a spectacle.
To make matters worse, I was disappointed to hear the comments from the motors commentators about the snatching under yellows and I note that it has already been mentioned.

The drivers should be aware of such dangers and if they don't slow down, should be given a telling off. It's not an easy job out there under the yellows, and although I am only still a trainee, I have a hell of alot still left to learn. Escpecially a few words of advice from the more experienced colleagues.

I didn't know that itv managed to capture both of the guys together in the pit lane, and I think that it was wrong to get them together considering what had just happened on live tv.

Don't know if anyone knew, but.............one of the other reasons why the driver started the fight, was because one of my colleagues witnessed the flying finger up at the driver who started the fight, hence why he may have become more agrressive.

I do hope that if they are going to wave their fingers and hand gestures at other drivers, they do keep it to the track, especially as I saw one of the mansell brothers (car 40) centralise his finger to a yellow and green form renault too. So I understand, behaviour like that on a public road would encur a possible penalty and/or a visit to the courts for roadrage, so not just flying fists, but fingers and hand gestures too.

why can't they just behave like good boys and play nicely? hehe

The one month ban will hurt, not to mention the close scrutiny they will be under when/if they get back to racing. Incidents like that may keep the Autosport editors happy but they do nothing for the sport.

You would think that the comentators would know the Clarevaux snatch procedures by now and just how good it is. To have a BTCC meeting without a red flag and only one safety car is a credit to excellent marshalling and some of the best control I have eavesdropped on with my scanner.
