NASCAR Whelen Modified Tour on Versus
For the American viewers, Versus is furthering their motorsports coverage by showing the Whelen Modified Tour. Bit late in the year to start something here, but I have always loved the Modifieds. With the Bristol race shown last Wednesday and the Budweiser King of Beers 150 at Thompson Speedway in Connecticut tonight, that's two modified races in as many weeks that I have viewed, and I must say that I love the possibilities of seeing more of this type of racing on TV. I have become increasingly frustrated with the "top flight" series, and love to see some good, grass roots, untainted series consistently.
The Modified series has been run predominantly in the Northeast, but has been run since the "beginning". Shame it isn't more popular, or would popularity ruin a good thing? Thompson Speedway looks pretty cool, but they also ran at Lime Rock Park; that would have been a great show as well. Sure some of the Yanks here can add more and educate me a bit. |

I remember when TNT (I think ?) used to televise the support event to the New Hampshire Nascar round with Eli Gold commentating. Always loved it. They are very fast little jiggers. Remind me of the roadsters from the fifties at Indy.
They used to show the dirt modifieds at Syracuse and other tracks up that way on telly about 10 years ago also. They were fun to watch too on the big Fairground tracks in particular. |

If I am not mistaken, the Dirt Modifieds run 800+ HP big blocks motors as opposed to small blocks in their little street cousins. The Syracuse Mile at the NY State Fairgrounds is their biggest event and the New Hampshire race is the biggest event for the Whelen Modifieds.
SPEEDtv has shown Martinsville and NH for sometime, even after the awful change over. I believe Eli Gold along with Buddy Baker were commentators for TNN (I guess that's the same thing as TNT, all owned by Ted, right?) I always like Eli Gold, even though he is the radio voice of Alabama football. |

TNN (The Nashville Network) is now called Spike and it used to air all kinds of racing on Saturday nights, after back to back Dukes of Hazzard.

I'm from Whelen Modified country; go to a few races per year. I'm so glad they're being televised. SPEED planned to air Martinsville, New Hampshire, Lime Rock, Bristol, and the other New Hampshire this year. I believe they have aired the first four already now; perhaps not Martinsville yet, despite having happened first.
The VERSUS commentary is not pleasing, but I'll take what I can get when it comes to seeing Christopher, Stefanik, Santos, Preece, etc. battling in fantastic cars. They're faster than the Cup cars around Bristol... Aren't VERSUS, or SPEED, going to also show a small amount of Whelen Modified Southern Tour races? I'd be interested to see those, too, just to see the different drivers and such. Popularity would ruin a good thing, but some coverage never hurts. It might help a few teams get a little more sponsor money, and that goes a long way. Santos, the series leader at the moment, is a Tommy Baldwin Racing development driver. It's a little-known fact, probably because there's no real need or concern for TBR development drivers when 9 times out of 10 they park. Perhaps they should have him in valet instead of Mods to practice for any future rides with Baldwin's team! (Nah, I know they're trying; I don't blame them. Baldwin's a good guy and Santos is easily one of the best racers I have ever seen in person at the local New England short tracks...he would have quite the future if he were more marketable). |

You mean you don't like Jimmy Spencer's commentary?!
I believe VERSUS is showing a Southern Series next, but their website doesn't give too much thought to the series. And the browsing is awful. Set for Monday and Tuesday next week... |

If you took a shot for every time Jimmy messed up a name, you'd be hammered ten min into the program.

Anyone catch the Loudon race today on SPEED?
I won't spoil it if anyone intends to watch later, but wow...the championship battle really intensified. |
