Sportscar Seating Position

I would really like to know the theory/reason behind this myth. Unlike F1 cars or other single seaters, most sportscars that I can think of do favour the slightly offset seating position, either to the left or right and very rarely you see one right in the centre. Surely one would think a centrally seated position would perhaps give the best weight distribution overall. Do you guys know why? Audi R8 is LHD, Lola B2K/40 is RHD...etc

Originally the idea with sportscars was that they were two seaters...

2 seater as in it needed a co-driver? Strange...

If we could we would build the cars with the driver in the middle but all or most Sports Prototype Regulations insist on room for a second seat in the car and give min cockpit dimensions and that the driver has to sit to one side of the center line of the car.

Depending on clockwise or anti-clockwise circuit it may be beneficial to have an off centre weight distribution.

===not at all, if you study their origins and history. The inmportant part of 'sports-racing' is Sports - they were originally road car based, and indeed many early events had navigators. The invention of pace notes was in road racing not rallying - Jenks and Moss in the Merc 300SLR IIRC.

MG David, talking of seating positions, was that you that turned upto Brands in your Maestro with the better half in the passenger seat, decamped in the paddock, and then procedded to thrash it around the Indy circuit on Sunday ?

Simon.

I beleive they choose RHD for Le mans because its clockwise, and so it offers better weight distribution, this is why a 250 GTO for example is RHD!!

In the old days - 917s (also RHD) etc they used to have to actually carry another seat (albeit a very small one) for the regs, is this still the case?

As my enginge/gearbox assy weights about five times what I do, I think it's better that I keep them in the middle and me off to the side. Lest we forget, most racing cars started with the engine at the front and the driven wheels at the back. Putting everything on the centre line would make it a bit tricky to find somewhere for ones feet

Its not weigth distribution as much as it is sighting apexes from what i have read/been told.

I don't believe they have to carry the "second seat" anymore I'm pretty sure that stopped when they stopped selling roadgoing versions
