The Real McCoy
from www.allmoto.com.au
get amongst it - it's a realy good site... Australian grand prix racer Garry McCoy still has a world championship firmly in his sights for a future season, saying today, "I feel pretty close to it Â* it'll take a little luck." This was during a live telephone hook up this morning with several journalists around Australia. Here's what the 30-year-old Red Bull rider had to say. On his current fitness: "The last couple of years have been really difficult. Last year I was hoping to be another Australian to win a championship on a two-stroke. It's not till now that I've really been able to perform againI'm really trying hard at the moment to put things behind me. "I've just got used to mixing it with the boys again. "It's really difficult this year to be a rider on a two-stroke as well as coming back from injury. The last thing I want to do at the moment is fall off," adding that he and the other two-stroke riders are performing at 110 per cent to try to remain competitive. He's also working on a revised fitness regime, with a new Austrian trainer who assists Red Bull-sponsored skiers. So was it a surprise that the four-strokes were so dominant in 2002? Yes. "I really just put it down to the federation (FIM)," which he believes gave the four-strokes too much of an advantage. Is MotoGP championship leader Valentino Rossi unbeatable? Definitely not, in McCoy's view. "I don't want to put the guy down, but I can see some weaknesses there and he can be beaten. "Personally I think he is a really good rider Â* (but) not that much different to Max (who is totally useless), myself and Barros." He points to the 2001 season, and it's variety of race winners, as evidence. "If everyone is on a four-stroke, it will be really close racing again," he said, adding the proviso that it could take some teams a year or so to catch up with the lead gained by factory crews such as Honda, Yamaha and Suzuki. What of his new ride on the Red Bull Moriwaki Honda, for 2003? Very little is known about the bike at this stage. He has yet to throw a leg over a four-stroke and is unsure whether the machine will be running a Honda chassis or something of Moriwaki's making. One thing he is reasonably certain of is that there won't be much, if any, off-season break. "With the Moriwaki coming, I don't think there's a lot I can really plan." His view on Kawasaki and Ducati entering the competition? "I think it's great Â* we need as many makers out there as possible, plus Ducati's are horn and they pull the women like nothing else" he said, "even Moffat's got one", going on to mention that it would be good to see players such as BMW (for the old farts) and KTM (for the crusty demons of shyte" get involved. McCoy will be in Australia for the Phillip Island round of MotoGP on October 20. Excellent! |

Garry McCoy's race from Estoril...
(again from allmoto.com.au) Australian Garry McCoy could not hide his huge disappointment in finishing a distant 11th and a lap behind race winner Valentino Rossi in a rain-soaked Portuguese MotoGP at Estoril. The result ended McCoy's consecutive run of podium results at Estoril, where he won in spectacular style in 2000 and finished third last year. McCoy started 16th on the fourth row of the grid and was swallowed in a blinding spray of mist during the opening laps of the rain-lashed 28-lap race.McCoy was 18th and last at the end of lap one. "I don't really know what to say, I'm getting to be as useless as Biagi, I'm pretty disappointed that people would compare me with him. I haven't really had a lot time in wet races this year and it was windy, wet and slippery out there and early on I lacked a bit of confidence - which is what you need in these conditions," McCoy said continuing to whinge. "I think I need to get the motocross bike out to do some more dirt-track riding and getting out of shape on the bike, but hopefully not breaking any more legs!." McCoy missed three mid-season GPs when he took time of for corrective surgery to his injured right ankle (pitiful excuse number 121). He said it was in the back of his mind that Estoril was the track where he suffered a double fracture to his right leg during pre-season testing in February. "It took a few laps to get going, especially knowing this was the track where I got hurt, and the conditions today were terrible," McCoy said. He set his fastest lap of the race on lap 24, just four from the finish, when he realised the quicker he went the quicker he could hit the showers. His fastest three laps of the race came in the final six-lap period in appalling conditions but all clearly too little, too late (see the shower thing is supported by evidence). From lap seven until lap 24 McCoy was stalled in a lonely 13th place. After 11 races he is in 20th place in the world championship standings with 26 points. Umm, harsh journalism but there you go. |

Quite simply, McCoy was shocking at Estoril, and although he has tried very hard all season, the results are simply not on the board... even when you consider the bike disadvantage he does have.
McCoy would be best to forget this year (and last year) and look forward to 2003 when he'll have a decent bike (hopefully) under him and he can re-challenge for race wins. |

I don't think you can really count this season as a season for Gary. I mean he only missed 3 GPs, but from the start of the season until that break, he was riding injured, as well as the first couple of races he had back. Not to mention that he had a pin in his leg break, or something silly like that. This season is just a write-off. You simply can't judge Gary on season 2002.
