1970's & 80's Super Saloons & Special Saloons (merged)
Here's an invitation for owners of cars fitting this bill:
After discussions with Rockingham, and the BRSCC, I am trying to find/attract as many of this sort of car as possible (that still exist!) to come out and play!! At the moment, it's looking like the best date will be the first weekend in August, as part of a Thunder Sunday meeting with the SCSA. The cars we want are: Cars that ran in the 1970's Super Saloons (Superloons), Special Saloons from the 70's, like Gerry "Swish" Taylor's Anglia, Thundersaloons from the "original" two-driver era (not the later Class "C" Supertourers). Anything that fits in with that "genre" of car, ie: Take a Mk1/Mk2 Capri and fit a GA, or a V8. Take a Sierra and fit a nice big V8 (in the front!). Big Rover's, etc... This will be a one-off race (unless you want more!!!), there may be a pot or two - which could be raced for again. I am going to consult some other "people in positions of importance" to suggest what the trophy could be called. The racing should be in the spirit of "Only Here for the Beer". I have three/four cars of the "big banger" variety on the list, and I'm fairly sure I can attract some other "well known" cars out of the woodwork. So where are you all! Stand up and be counted. As Lord Horatio Herbert Kitchener said "Your Country Needs YOU" PM Me if you are interested, or you know where a car is laguishing just pining to burst back into life..... Rob. |

You're already booked in mate! Pollards chequebook is being retrieved by a crack SAS team as we speak.
Corvette? Does it fit in with Thundersaloon, 70's/80's Special or Super Saloon rules with one hand over your left eye, and squinting with your right? Still not a saloon is it.... Does it sound nice? Maybe.... Rob. |

That required heavy lifting gear didn't it? The sort you need for a Horsehair matteress stuffed with ten-bob notes....

Brilliant idea Rob. Peter Thurston's Escort definitely fits the bill. What about cars like Ric Woods Calibra V8 etc? Are they eligible?
Good luck. |

This sounds fantastic!
I wonder if messrs Peter Baldwin and Ginger Marshall could be persuaded to bring their famous Mini and Kitten respectively out for an event like this? Is the Doc's Karmann Ghia still about as well? |

Bill Richards still has his Metro 1380 Cosworth that he campaigned in the Wendy Wools series - does that fit the criteria?

Righty ho,
Pete Baldwin sold his Mini, so it's long gone (to Japan as it happens!) Ginger Marshall.... not sure if he still has it, but if he has, yes, that's the ticket! Bill "Mad Dog" Richards' Metro is welcome, as this is the era of car that I'm looking for, as well as thundersaloons like Ric Wood's (who is keen to come out with it!) Quite a few guys from the North East have shown interest with Imp's etc.. I'm hoping to get in touch with Joe Ward via Cambridge Motorsport, unless you can contact him directly Andrew? I understand that he still has the commodore as well as Baby Bertha.... Ric Wood is going to lend a hand, as he has quite a few people in his address book. I'd like to get hold of Pete Stevens too.... The Rover's and Capri's that ran in Thundersaloons too.... Your help is appreciated. Rob. |

Very good idea, great to see. I have the ex Hibbert/Prior Camaro IROC/Thundersaloon (sister car to Al Weyman's), rebuild very much on the back burner right now though, Would love to see these cars out again. Will have a look at some of the Thundersaloon programmes to see who else should be flushed out!

We are building a MK2 escort based on the Nick Whiting car, that run the GAA V6. The trouble is that we dont have GAA money, so are fitting a twin turbo 24v granada cosworth lump. If its ready, could we enter this?

I'll get on to Cambridge Motorsport and Joe Ward. Would be great to have Baby Bertha out there again after it's run in the Birkett last year.

What happened to all the Skodas, Daf's and converted Sports 2000's that were around in the late 70's?

The only Skoda left racing (that I know of) was the one used by Tony Sugden. Fitted with a Cosworth YB Turbo, and still winning up to the point where he finally, totally, absolutely, had to retire. But perhaps, like Status Quo, his "End of the Road Tour" will be the start of another chapter of more racing! The Sports 2000's that became Hillman Imps? or even one that I remember being painted red, and someone running it as a "Ferrari 308" (didn't look anything like one!) I'll post a list of cars that would be nice to find.... If anyone wants to add what / who they know, please do. Rob. |

In the top 6 Rob? I recon I would be lucky to not to get in the last 6 with some of the heavy stuff you are proposing coming out. Your call but do you really want all that Formula machinery with flimsy plastic bodies out in the race as they (IMHO) spoilt the scene years ago. Can't you keep it in the style of the original Thunder/special saloons.

Firstly, the DAF is steel bodied.
Probably the fastest thing on the list at the moment is Ric's Calibra. Remember, to finish first, first you have to finish! Lots of fragile machinery there... Rob. |

I was more refering towards the F2000 and F5000 chassied cars like the Imps and the Beatle. What is Tony Sugdens Skoda based on because every time I have seen that race it seems to disappear in to the distant.
