Formula BMW Asia - Shanghai
Well the F-BMW title has been decided, but the racing at this new state of the art circuit will certainly be a highlight of the season....
Of an important note, there will be a new Australian driver on the grid this weekend, and will be out to show the grid that he will be a contender in 2005.... Tobia Kipper.... More info to follow on the race and Tobia Kipper, but suffice to say he will be a star of the future, no question! Take this into perspective.... Tobia went to Sepang in January, and tested for Meritus racing. Not only was this his first open-wheel test, it was his first look at a fullsize race track! As he had never even been to a race meeting apart from major karting events... To make matters worse, his first run in the car was in the typical Sepang downpour! :P At the end of the 2 days completing 40 plus laps without incident, was 5 tenths slower than Josh Hunt, who was testing on the same day, in the same equipment.... and as us Aussies know, Josh has a lot more experience in all sorts of racing, and is currently racing F Atlantic in the USA.... So keep an eye out for Tobia! |

Tobia Kipper, or not Tobia Kipper? That is the question.

Ahhh that dry British humour...hmmmm.... you Lad's have Jenson Button, let's add to the mix Tobia
This is the press release from January's test... http://www.meritus.com Sepang / Malaysia, Formula BMW Trials, January 2004 On 29/30 January 2004 Tobia Kipper had the opportunity of testing a single seater racing car for the first time. The venue was the Sepang circuit, also host to the yearly Malaysian F1 Grand Prix. With a career so far limited to national go kart racing in Australia, this was Kipper’s first venture into serious motor racing and single seaters in particular. Whilst the setting and the occasion might have been a little overwhelming to a 17 year old, Kipper handled the task of performing under pressure extremely well and came out with flying colours: by the end of the 2-day trial his best time was under a second slower than the fastest performer who had extensive previous race car experience. Arranged by Meritus as a talent-scouting exercise over two days, the Sepang meeting used 1.2 lt Formula BMW race cars. Taken under the wings of Malaysian Formula 1 driver Alex Yoong as tutor, Kipper clocked a total of 50 laps, improving in every session to record a best time of 2min14sec over the 5500m circuit. Reaching a top speed down the main straight of 210km/h Kipper was quick to admit the huge step from karts to single seater racing: The G-forces were phenomenal, especially in turn 5 at 175km/h. It was especially hard on the arms. An uncomfortable seat didnt make it much easier. Kipper undoubtedly has to improve on his physical fitness, but nevertheless quickly managed to come to grips with the car and the track: Braking is much harder, I had to release brake pressure otherwise I would have locked up straight away whilst changing down gears. I came to terms with heel and toe and the car’s handling dynamics, especially the aerodynamics. Donning his helmet with an imitation Senna colour scheme Kipper displayed the necessary confidence that can be expected from a young racing driver taking such a first big step. A certain degree of caution, governed by the risk of throwing the car into the barriers, tamed what might well have been the fastest lap of the trials. In comparison to his far more experienced peers some having years of single seater racing under their belts Kipper made maximum use of the opportunity, slowly adapting to his racing machinery and the track and finally being rewarded with an excellent assessment by mentor Alex Yoong, indicating tremendous potential for the future. Practice at 930 am and Qualifying late arvo at 430 pm! updates to follow.... Williams in 2009 |

Its ashame there isn't a Formula BMW Champion shoot-out to find out who the best of the best is. The overall winner from each country would then know where they are on world standings. It should be fair if its a circuit that no-one really knows. I'd be surprised if BMW didn't even put into some £ to make it happen. ks

if that would have happened my money would have been on Sebastian Vettel the german champion, from 20 races he won 18, the other 2 were podium finishes

Tobia did a solid job, friday practice was limited to 2 flying laps as the throttle broke! and qualifying was hampered with a damaged exhaust and was down on power.... so to race, bring the car home, and get faster with every single lap... the team were happy, and the data showed the improvements...

I heard that BMW was going to do the Formula BMW World Final in Macau to support the F3 Grand Prix. Since the Macau F3 Grand Prix is like the F3 World Final already.
As Macau is a street race no F BMW drivers will have much prior knowledge of the circuit. |

I'm sure Alex had at least some helpful hints at this stage of the game for Tobia....After all the guy has driven F1 no matter what happened at the end of the day! Tobia will improve with laps, its just a matter of time, he was dropped in the deep-end and didn't bend the car!!! which can't be said for other far more experienced drivers....
