Nick names in motorsport
Just for a bit of light hearted fun who has what nick names and why,as in the Ovals race world everybody seems to have one.

I guess one of the best I know is: Harald "Nippel" Grohs.
Sounds even strange in German. |

This is a bit dodgy, I know loads, but the owners could be reading this. This should be a safe one from the seventies. When I was racing sidecars there was a guy called Brian Mark competing from the same town as me who always had the story of how he was about to move up a place when the chequered came out. He came to be known as Brian "one more lap" Mark.

I remember in the 'old days' at Silverstone during the Esso Formula Ford races ( 2 heats & a final !!) that some of the drivers had nick-names.
The commentator at the time Peter Scott-Russell (correct me if I'm wrong) used various names for drivers. Rick Morris was "The Old Fox" as he saw off the young hotshoes in his SDC Builders backed car. And there was John 'Butcher' Booth & John 'Brolly' Booth - didn't one of them found Manor Motorsport? And down at Brands there were 2 drivers called Tim Jones so one of them became Tim 'East Grinstead' Jones. Wasn't one of them commentator Brian Jones' son? Perhaps the place to revive nick-names is the one circuit championships such as at Castle Combe where the regular drivers return year on year. How about Matt "Nick-name Tech" Rivett for starters? |

Allan McNish was known as 'squish' at least upto 99-2000 or so.

Wasn't good old Gerry Marshall responsible for a lot of his fellow saloon car racers nick names?
I'm thinking of Randy Mouse, Gillian All-Askew-Thomas and Strawberry. Plus, wasn't he responsible for christening Graham Scarborough - 'Skid'? |

James Hunt was known as "Hunt the Shunt" for obvious reasons from his F3 days.

When Andy Wallace raced in FF and F3 at Silverstone we "on the bank" renamed him Andy "Wallache" to give him a more glamerous name against the Brazilians that dominated at the time

Very good thread
"Well, well, well, here comes Tim Jones. I wonder if he could be any relation to, well, me, ladies and gentlemen..."
Direct quote, Brian Jones, circa 1986... Smokin Jo Winkelhock? Isn't Simon Harrison's known as Hamster...? Isn't Paul O'Neill known as Owy (something to do with a scouse accent) and also called Moxie (From Aufedersien Pet...)...? MG racer Sideshow Bob? Barry Sideways Smith? And isn't there a guy who races at Snett called Ray Singh...? |
