British Rallycross 2021
Can't see it mentioned elsewhere, so here is a thread for the 2021 British Rallycross Championship.
Proposed calendar for the year: May 29/31 - Lydden Hill, England July 10/11 - Mondello Park, Ireland August 29/30 - Pembrey, Wales September 25/26 - Knockhill, Scotland November 6/7 - Lydden Hill, England December 4/5 - Spa Francorchamps, Belgium Date changes seem inevitable at this point, but hopefully things will have calmed down enough for the season to wrap up at Spa. |

I'm probably being overly optimistic but I reckon that every round will take place. I think Mondello is the most likely to be pushed back. I'd be surprised if by May, Lydden are allowed a full field of spectators, but I can see what happened back in August happening again. With elite sport status in England, BRX could still run even now just without spectators.
In terms of entries I know Godfrey, O'Donovan and Hill should be back in their old or brand new cars. Ovenden and Sellar are likely to return as well. |

That's a pretty sensible looking calendar in terms of dates - the start of the season has been delayed quite a bit so there's a chance it'll start as planned.
I'm not sure about Mondello and Spa though - they'll very much depend on whether travel is allowed. Presumably those rounds are open to local drivers as well? I'm wondering what the effect of Brexit will have on the number of uk drivers going to those events? If Mondello and Spa aren't an option I wonder if they'll run additional rounds at Lydden? |

Thought Ovenden looked a lot more on the pace at rounds two and three, hopefully he can be closer to the sharp end this year. Be good to see Roger Thomas out again as well, that Fiesta is too good not to be raced! Quote:
I haven't read the notes in detail but, from what I understand, it looks like an extra £1000 for a car to make a trip to and from Europe. I am sure they won't be too much of a hardship for the Supercar crowd travelling to Spa, but I can see it hitting a lot of the support categories hard. (And of course the above also applies for European drivers coming to UK rounds as well) Guess that could be a fall back option again? |

Things I didn't predict for 2021 - another new class
https://www.rallycrossbrx.com/news/a...-grids-in-2021 This is an extra MINI class using the 4wd Countryman model - they're hoping to have 4 cars running this year. I kind of understand where they're coming from - a budget 4wd class makes sense I guess but it's yet another class to dilute the grids further. Is this needed with the BTRDA running a clubman 4wd class? Are these cars eligible for the BTRDA class as well? (surely they'd design the regs so they would be). |

Yeah. I hate being negative about new ideas, but it seems daft to be adding yet another class when some of the existing ones seem to be struggling for numbers. Hopefully the cars will, as you say, be eligible for use in the BTRDA Championship as well.
Reading that article, the four names who are confirmed are all existing BMW Mini drivers: shame to see that class losing four names, when it has been one of the most consistent for decent entry numbers in the last few years. Given that nothing was mentioned last year, I assume that truck rallycross has been put on hold for now? |

I think I'd be inclined to run the MINIs and Swifts together - they're pretty much the same concept and performance doesn't seem wildly different. The class that needs some real help with numbers is super national - that always used to be a well supported class with a wide range of cars. They've lost quite a few into the retros and there doesn't seem to be many new cars / drivers coming into the class which is a real shame. I'd totally forgotten about the Truck rallycross I didn't really understand the need for it at the time - even less so now. Hopefully that'll be filed under "seemed like a good idea at the time" and quietly forgotten about. |

I would imagine the Bell guys are probably doing this, so it gets the nod as they seem to supply half the grid at times. It's not 3hat you know sadly.

Interesting, BRX proposing to have electric cars eligible in supercar class, waiting for MSUK approval
https://mailchi.mp/0d58ebe55c4c/decl...llenge-1075349 Don't really have an opinion on this yet, I'm interested to see electric in rallycross and at least amalgamating the classes means you still have the noise...plus currently the electric cars are generally slower than all out supercars. |

It's an interesting move - one for the future really rather than this year I'd have thought (unless they run one as a demo at some point).

They're not exactly spoilt for choice as far as circuits go though are they? If you compete in the British and BTRDA events you can be a bit more selective and knock the longer journies on the head.

Might put another car or two on the grid and could be a good way to introduce us to electric. I am sure the electric cars will evolve quickly, so they could be on the pace of the National Supercars. Quote:

I'm intrigued to know how the championship can avoid having events at the same tracks given that there are only 3 rallycross circuits on the 'mainland'. They're either going to have to accept some overseas events, have a 3 round season, have some duplicates or a mix of both. Mix of both seems the best option to me. |

I can't wait to see electric rx cars on track. They are probably a bit too heavy to put in the best lap times but off the line they will be the quickest. Plus you can't stall them.
Barrett's hoping to put a 2 car team together, budget permitting. Wouldn't be surprised to see more than that compete. I'm wondering what infrastructure/training for marshals need to be put in place to safely deal with damaged electric cars. There's definitely enough demand for another rx circuit on mainland GB, it's just what circuit wants to step up. Maybe Croft will open up again in 2022??? I don't see how having 2 overseas rounds is sustainable, at least for support categories. |

No doubt it is fast. Can't see an electric Supercar inspiring as much passion as a combustion engined car, but I don't think it is unfeasible to think that an electric car could be a National Championship winner in the right hands. Few regulars plus a handful of new cars on track (most of those were BTRDA), plus Andy Scott, Tristan Ovenden and Kevin Procter. Didn't get a chance to speak to Procter, but I hope he is back this year: he spent most of the day throwing his Fiesta round Paddock bend. |

Few shots from the test day at Lydden...
Really like the new livery on the Albatec 208, looking forward to seeing more of that this year... ...and also cool tribute livery on the Lee Wood Escort as well. Handful more here: https://www.flickr.com/photos/229616...57719053325985 If you want to see more! |

Nice! The Albatec car will certainly stand out in that scheme, also really liking that Escort. Quick question - is the Focus that Chris langley was driving the same one that Mark Watson (not Mad Mark - the other one) had?
