the Luke Youlden Mustang sports sedan

I see Luke Youlden is giving Tony Ricciardello some opposition this weekend in a Mustang - anyone know the origin of the car .... new ?

Qualifying will be interesting.

Although i'm more of a fan of the 'proper' Sports Sedans rather than the TraNZams like Youlden's & Wall's, its good to see the competition at the top improving.

Where is the Hossack Audi?

What are the major differences between Sport Sedans and TransAms?

And obviously TransAms qualify as Sport Sedans. Or do they? Is it a "sweetheart deal" that allows them to run?

Lukes Mustang history

Hi guys this is Bernie Gillons old car before he put his dollars into TKR, some will remeber it at Sandown Winton PI with a very subtle rear number plate, i am sure i can find a pic somewhere. we had a ball with this car.

Hmmm......if the V8 supercar category fails due to lack of manufacturer support, we should then race these at Bathurst......I could handle that!

Luke took R1, R2 but Tony came back in R3. It is going to be an interesting season if Luke competes in all the rounds along with the Audi.

they were absolutely flying today out at mallala. unfortunately i didn't check my camera's battery on only got 4 pics of the porsche category before it died

Des had a fire in the corvette on saturday and packed the car away. There was one of the EX transam Jaguars in a truck that didn't appear all weekend.

the battle between Luke, Tony and Darren in race 3 was pretty good - Luke ran off in turn 3 and fell back to 4th so it took him a while to catch back up to the front 2

Good to see Tony respond in the best way, but it appears the Alfa still has the measure of the new arrivals.

That Alfa is just extraordinary........ every time it just gets faster and faster........ and it was good to see they've picked up some Red Rooster money as well.

The acceleration of the top sports sedans is just out of this world, fantastic to watch. The field may not have been large, but the quality was enough that it didn't matter.

Anyone know where Dean Randle was btw? Has the Kerrick money gone?

not sure, it would have been good if he was there to factor in the front battle

Dean Camm was at the track - didn't get a chance to speak to him just saw him in passing

if they continue to race like this while the new cars slowly filter in it "should" be promising by the end of the year.

Ron Hossack is in the process of building a new chassis for Dean following the shunt at Phillip Island last year plus a new Carbon Fibre body. He will be missing from at least the 1st 3 rounds. See article on link:

I believe that TraNZams were previously allowed by invitation but the Sports Sedan rules are now being "adjusted" to make TraNZam cars legal.

TraNZams aren't required to retain the origianl turret, pillars and door frames. The doors aren't required to open and the maximum engine capacity is 5 litres.

Too true. And what a noise. My god, the noise. It sounded, to quote the great Clarkson, like Tom Jones gargling a Nascar.

I've been going to Mallala for yonks now and I've never felt the media centre resnoate so much when a car goes past as it did when Youlden and Hossack flew past in tandem during those races.

If those cars are an example of where Sports Sedan racing is going, then I'm all for it!

Thanks for the info Dave, much appreciated. I notice though that the Youlden Mustang is running a 6 litre engine and not the 5 litre, so I guess it was built in NZ. They obviously know how to bolt an engine together properly. Can anyone shed any light on who the engine builder is?

Bluesport......Luke's car is 100 percent a 6 liter engine........The engine originate's from Cosworth's USA NASCAR program, and produce around 750 HP @ 8200 RPM.

Thanks Alfacors hopefully the fields will grow for PI and I might go down. Good to see Youlden back in Sports Sedans, When he was driving the Rotary it was brilliant, shame the owner wont bring it out anymore it would still be quick.

No it was not built in New Zealand, bolted together probably. The engine was a US Cosworth Ford developed unit. The Mustang was a replica of Boris Said's Trans Am winning car built by the same company (APS from memory) that built Boris's car. Information I obtained about the car from Bernie Gillon and the US Company.
