BYE Murray...you'd be missed

"ITV have announced that the US Grand Prix will be Murray Walker's last race in the commentary box."

Geez, although i don't get to hear him live during races, i've heard clips of his legendary words, and couldn't help laugh at them at times. Its sad to see him leave, and to those who views ITV, enjoy this last moment!

It was Muarry himself who decided to finish the season early. He didn't want his sign-off at Suzuka - which would be broadcasted at 3 in the morning - sensible choice.

I feel the same GT_R. I never heard Murray during races, but heard many clips and games too...

Murray has to be one of the greatest commentators ever, in any sport. He is a true legend, a great character with knowledge, enthusiasm and style. It won't be the same ithout it, but I say its high time he was made Sir Murray. anyone know the address of the petition to get him knighted?

It is a good choice and maybe it will mean ITV decide to broadcast the race live this year and not 'as live' at 11pm . We can but hope.

He's the last link with the past when it was a sport - despite the fact his slips can be annoying I will miss him - but Brundle and Allen are a good team. Will they ever match Hunt and Walker tho?

Then again Shaw and Hobbs on the Indycar are superb, as is Ben Edwards.

It was definitely time to retire. Murray's gaffes were becoming routine, he is semi-senile now. But... even a semi-senile Walker is better than <yawn> Allen on his best day.

No-one will ever match murray. Or Hunt for that matter, except murray!

I think Ben Edwards should be given a shot as he's the next best thing IMO.

Bye bye Murray, thanks for all the gaffes....'And into the pits comes the green Ferrari....'

Now, will James Allen become the new Muzza? Maybe by about 2020

It will be a sad day for Formula One in general on September 30, 2001 when Murray Walker lays down the microphone for the last time.

We've all grown accustomed to Murray's legendary gaffes and his pants-on-fire style, but there is no doubt he will never be replaced.

So I say to Murray farewell and enjoy the rest of your life.

*thinks for a second.....*

No Murray, don't go!!!! I don't want to put up with James Allen.

Come back!!!!!

It will be a sad day for the sport losing a man who has truly become a legend. Good luck and best wishes Murray.

I echo all of the above sentiments about Murray and would also like to see Ben Edwards given the chance to shine on TV. His broadcasting prowess on Eurosport is well known and I believe he would be a good foil for Martin Brundle. Ben is also a racing driver and was Chief Instructor at Brands Hatch for many years before joining Eurosport. He has a mountain of knowledge on the sport and would shine in my opinion.

Yeah I've always liked Ben Edwards' style, I'd rather see him on F1 than James 'you're not gonna believe this guys' Allen. Ben would have much more chance of being as knowledgable, personable and enthusiastic as Murray

Is Allen definitely confirmed for next year?

I thought the idea of murray missing a few races was to give ITV the chance to try out some replacements not just Allen.

If this is so then Suzuka should be Ben Edwards chance.

I'm pretty sure he's left himself free of long term contracts with Eurosport just in case.

Very sad for you all, Murray was one of the best F1 commentator, good luck with the next one.

But in Holland we still have Olav Mol.

Tiff Needell is the fans favourite

Second is Jeremy Clarkson!

This was a poll conducted by Green Flag on who would you like to replace Murray

Tiff 35%
Jeremy 14%

Actually, I had never thought of Jeremy Clarkson. He would be brilliant and a natural successor to Murray. It would be like having Murray Walker and James Hunt rolled into one!

I won't remember Murray for the mistakes, I'll remember him as a man of passion and enthusiasm for Formula One that is unmatched by anyone in the paddock.

A one of a kind.

Sir, you will be missed.

I would just like to add my good wishes and thanks to Murray, and as so rightly mooted by BootsOntheSide my vote goes to a Knighthood. Arise Sir Murray!

A knighthood is the very least that they can do for him. I'm lobbying for a peerage.

Lord Walker of Silverstone has a certain ring to it, don't you think?

The one consolation that I have about Murray retiring from F1 commentary is that hopefully he'll have more time for other events such as Goodwood. It clashed with Monza this year, so we missed out on his inimitable style on the PA.

And such a nice guy. Two years ago, friends and I were strolling through the paddock, and were met by Murray coming the other way, with a cheery, friendly greeting. Very personable he was, as though we were old friends - although he may have been very much mistaken!
