Wollek, Bob

just having a quick glance at the driver files, and noticed one of the greats of sportscar racing was missing! So, let's add Bob Wollek.

Perenially unlucky, witness many of his Le Mans entries, but always good entertainment, and sadly killed on his bicycle in 2001, preparing for that year's Sebring 12 hours.

in thrity attempts, he never won le mans; though i reckon he deserved to, and i'm sure i'm not alone in that opinion.

Aside from racing, he owned a Jag dealership, and apparently won three world skiing titles! in '65, '66 and '68. There goes Luc Alphand's novelty

But in all; Bob Wollek was a Porsche driver, and a very good one at that. His heyday was Group C, but he raced both before and after; and definitely a man who deserves to be in the driver files!

At first I thought he was a german, but he was a sort of 'franco-german' as he came from Alsace and we all now Alsace's history.

Anyway, he was a regular entrant in DRM from the mid 70s although I don't have an idea what he did before.

A great driver and a great character. A crying shame he never netted that elusive Le Mans victory he so deserved.

He did win 4 Daytonas and at least one Sebring though?

Did he drive the gold Miller 962 at Daytona 90? or 89?

Drove it in 89 with Bell and John Andretti - winner.

Bob Wollek

If you would like to see some period photos of Bob Wollek in F2 (1973), take a look at my website WWW.JONATHANGREAVES.COM

Ah, Bob. The best Le Mans winner we never had?

I take it the Martini suit is from the Lancia LC2 days?

He was always solid, and fast, but unlucky...

Yes Tim, he had a full season with Lancia in 1985.
12th at Silverstone in May, 6th at Le Mans and 3rd at Brands in September, were the ones I saw.
