Smells of nostalgia
It is said the sense of smell is one of the most powerful triggers for memories...
Does anyone remember the deliciously intoxicating smell of Castrol R?? Or any other fragrance that brings back memories? Cheers Peter |

I remember they used Castrol R(30 or 40, i dunno) a lot in the 50cc prototype racebikes back in the day, like the 24 hours of Bertrix for instance.
I think several of them still use it, but i don't go to races as often as i used to... Smelled quite nicely if i may say so myself. |

This sucks big time!
I've been into racing since teen years and never did know *which* cool smell was the castrol R ! I think i'll have to hang round the go kart tracks and ask for a demo |

Just put a couple of spoons of caster oil in your petrol tank. You'll get the aroma of Castrol R.

In the halcyon days of the Phoenix Park Motor Races when proper cars used to race there, the air was full of the smell of Castrol R and freshly cut grass. A magic combination.

Good thread man I've thought this so many times. Years and years ago I was taken as a babe in arms to Goodwood by my (late) father. Many many years later when I first went to a VSCC meet the smell almost brought tears to my eyes. I just knew it......... |

The smell of Castrol R reminds me of... Shelsley Walsh. Some wonderful summer days spent there.

No-one's mentioned the strangely sugary smell of burnt methanol (and shame on you VSCC boys for forgetting that one).
Burnt castor oil & meths, matched to the crackly exhaust note it produces, is the one to get to the hairs on the back of your neck. |
