Taupo confirmed!!!
Great news for all NZ motorsport fans, the Taupo round of A1GP has been confirmed for Jan 19-21 2007.
Source: http://www.stuff.co.nz/stuff/0,2106,...4a1823,00.html This is great news for NZ as it is arguably the first significant international motorsport event for the country since the 1970's (if you regard V8 Supercars as a predominantly Australian series only). Big applause for A1GP for having the belief in a small country such as NZ, for A1GP Team New Zealand's Colin Giltrap and Bob McMurray, and the developers of the Taupo circuit for making it possible. It is going to be fantastic!!! |

Congrats, I hope that it is a fantastic event. I have never been to the circuit sadly but visted Taupo when I worked briefly in NZ for a few weeks 3 years ago. The area is outstandingly beautiful and has everything I need in a 5 mile radius - a fantastic lake and sailing, several golf courses, beautiful scenery, skiing and a race circuit. The place really is my idea of heaven. Sadly I could not persuade my wife to emigrate!

That's great news, look foward to seeing the track, I assume there using the full 3.5km layout?
By the way, I saved this pic of a track in NZ a while ago but don't know what track it is or even if it's real. What do you think? http://server2.uploadit.org/files/Ch...rJ-NZTrack.jpg |

Thats the proposed Hampton Downs track. I'm not sure what stage it's construction is at, but they were aiming to host A1 i think.
They obviously won't be next year now it seems. |

The corner after that long straight must be interesting, any stories about that Mitzi dude?
Apparently the circuit will have grandstand seating for 20,000 and total capacity of 40,000. Surely that will be filled. |

KIwi 3. That straight is awesome.200+ into a nice left/ right hand turn then left onto the front straight.if you miss the corner you can shoot down the Drag strip. no roll overs on that part yet. just spins and near misses. ROB.

I have memories of Jos wiping his Formula Atlantic against a large tractor tyre that formed the inside of a hairpin at Wigram about 14 years ago. Still have a picture of him walking back with his helmet in hand and an embarrased look on his face somewhere... |

I do remember reading something about Hampton Downs now that I think about it. Looks like a good circuit, Taupo looks interesting as well. |

thats awesome news. The track looks great and the event is just what NZ motorsport needs. Unfortunately I won't be in the country in Jan, but will have to try to check it out next time I'm back.
Is there any chance that the V8's could get moved from Puke to Taupo? |
