Car numbers
Here are 3 cases of car numbers for drivers that to me appear to be in the wrong order:
MCLAREN 1998: Coulthard No.7, Hakkinen No.8 BAR 2001: Panis No.9, Villeneuve No.10 MINARDI 2001: Marques No.20, Alonso No.21 It seems to me that in all 3 cases the better driver had the worser number (if you know what I mean). Any explanation would be welcome for these 3 cases. I'm sure there are a few others that I don't know about. |

With the BAR one. Apparently JV likes to have a car number thar is the closest resemblence to number 1 (a luck thing). Seeing as 10 backwards is 01 thats closer than 9!! Strange I know, but apparently true.

More to the point...Why do they bother with race numbers at all on F1 cars? There are none on the sides, and the front number is unreadable.
Was a time when F1 cars were slow enough to read them... these days we recognise them by their 'partners' graphics. |

Regarding Minardi, it was probably because Marques was more experienced...

Senario 1 : Mclaren 98.
The previous year, DC finished the championship ahead of Mika. Thus, he is awarded the 'smaller' number. Senario 2 : BAR 2001. I'm not 100% sure, but what i heard is JV gave Oliver Panis, who just joined BAR the number 9. It's something to do with Panis liking the number (for luck) as it's the number he carried when he got his first win. Senario 3 : Minardi 2001. Probably because Marques is more "experienced" or because of sponsorships... |

BUT after laughing alot, I decided to tell you the real reason - it may have something to do with Senna's death. As for the number 8, 8 is a lucky number. Just ask Jukebox!! Valve |

Nothing to do with Senna's death
Senna had #2 racing for Williams The year before, Prost won the Championship took the number 1 could have gone to another team with the number 2. Since Prost wasn't racing in 1994, the number 1 was removed and the number 2 stayed to Williams because the champion wasn't going to another team. So there was a number missing for a williams car and the FIA assigned the number 0. Since Senna didn't want that number, he took number 2 |

Thanks for your replies guys both of you Evil and Valve, but I stay with the explanation of Evil because Hill had already number 0 on his car from the first grand prix of 1994 and Senna was yet alive.

Just speaking about numbers, why did Mansell carry "Red 5" for most of his career???

Red 5 was a marketing ploy more than anything. Plus, didn't he win his first race with a red five so he kept it for luck/tradition? Would be the best explanation.
Damon Hill carried the 0 because Williams were joint drivers/constructors champions from 1992 and 1993, but the world champion had left the team. So Prost (93) and Senna (94) drove the number 2 car while Damon drove the 0 car in 1993-94. So, in other words, you are wrong Legend. |

Did you know that M Schumacher once had 'Red 5' on his car? Spain 1994, probably because they thought he was going to equal Mansell's record of winning the first 5 races.....

Interesting point Kex. That was probably the last time the number 5 was in red....unless I'm mistaken (which I probably am!)

McLaren might have had a red five in 1996 perhaps? They would have been about third in the constructors cup behind Benetton and Williams perhaps? I am too lazy to look it up...

MCLAREN 1998: Coulthard No.7, Hakkinen No.8 - DC scored more points in 1997 (36-27)
BAR 2001: Panis No.9, Villeneuve No.10 - Panis won in 1996 with car #9, BAR tried for the luck to return. MINARDI 2001: Marques No.20, Alonso No.21 - Marques had done races. I might be just backing people up here, rather than giving new info. |

How can I be wrong, as I do not recall the real event? That is why I asked to not live in ignorance! Go and take a look to former replies by me and others and tell me where I was wrong! Some others where wrong and I accepted their explanation like I accept yours now. So where is the “wrong thing”? |

Sorry Legend, forgot to add the sarcastic to it. Didn't mean to imply you were 'wrong', more of a lighthearted jab.
