Gp Saturday Qualifying
That first part was an absolute disgrace. Even ITV had to move off and include some features. For the paying public(a good turnout), well to see the fastest formula in the world slowing down in order to gain an early slot in the next session, I couldn't believe it.
Please, why can't we go back to the 1 hour session. I know it often meant little happened at first, buy boy was it good when they all went for it. Give me those Turbo days when you saw those cars charging into Woodcote !!!!! |

What was wrong with the old 1 hour system?
The TV people were not at all happy that the only thing moving for the first 25-30 minutes were the Minardi's, and even they only ran becuase they knew they would get TV time for the sponsors. Then as everyone poured onto the cleaner, grippier track in the last minute or so to get the ultimate last lap in, the TV people suddenly found they had 3 or 4 cars, all on hot laps looking to set pole, and could only show 1 of them live, which was a bit of a waste especially if the director picked the wrong one, the one who didn't end up on pole. TV and the old system didn't mix. |

I thought it was interesting strategy-wise - I'm only annoyed that the promised rain didn't appear!

Why not cut the old hour session down to say half hour or 45 minutes so everyone is forced out more or less when the session starts??

Why not have a maximum of half an hour with no limit on the amount of laps you can do?
Oh sorry, that's club and National racing, how silly of me! |

Everyone gets an extra hour for setup and practice, and the fans get a bit more action... |

Why not run it like in the days of old all track time counts towards the grid and your fastest lap out of all four practice sessions counts as you fastest tme for pole possition.

I totally agree with what Mike Gascoyne said about it on Sunday. If F1 are so up themselves that they don't think of the spectators and what they're paying to see the cars properly - it has no future. I think the FIA should ban this immediately - it is cheating IMO. The problem obviously is as Schuey proved - there are easy ways of getting round it. I'm just very glad it didn't actually rain and it didn't work.
Full compliments to Jenson for doing it properly. |
