Why is Benetton hiding their engine?
At Friday's practice a large sheet was blocking the back of the Benetton to hide the Renault engine from the photographers.
My question is why? Do they have a new camless engine? Are they using valve springs again instead of pneumatic? Maybe something else? Although their performance has been lacking this year, maybe it's because their trying to clean out all these bugs from the new engine. Obviously everything in F1 is a secret, but this seems more. This seems revolutionary. Thoughts?... |

But don't ALL teams do this?? Even Minardi cover their front and rear wings, engines etc. to keep out prying eyes. And IF this 111-degree lump IS so revolutionary (!) then thet will be all the more reason to cover it. An engine in development is a closley guarded thing.

If I performed as badly as the Benenton engine, I would hide my face. Maybe they are renting the Fondmetals from Paul Stoddart for the time being. to get them over a difficult PERIOD

Its an interesting question & one which Martin Brundle raised (but was unable to come up with an answer to) during qualifying this morning, which does suggest that although everything on an F1 car is a secret, Benneton are making more of an effort to hide the engine that usual !!

didn't martin also suggest they should be promoting their technology in a vain attempt to get the rest of the grid behind them?
if you'll believe rumours, perhaps this is exactly what they're doing with minardi (DON'T DO IT, PAUL!) |

There are quite a few other things 'new' with this engine other than just the 111 degree Vee. They are rumoured to be using solenoids to drive the valves rather than any sort of cam. Just this alone would allow massive advantages with being able to adjust the valve timing of each cylinder seperately, on the fly!
BMW experimented with this a year or two ago, needless to say, they never managed to tame it. Renault are trying to. They're here for the challenge. Renault are innovators. They have a nice super light V6 f1 engine in the works for when the '10 cylinder only' rule becomes relaxed in a few years. Now if only we could get the FIA to un-ban rotary technology..... lets just say Ford would have a new found interest in Mazda's engine division and THEN we would see leaps and bounds made in engine technology! |
