The Volvo Estate

OK, all us BTCC fans know that Volvo used an Estate in 1994

Well I found a picture of the 850 Estate racing in a touring car race, nothing unusual there

Except the 850 looked different to the normal 850 that was raced in 94 by Jan Lammers and Rickard Rydell

The livery just looks a little different to the estate raced in the BTCC.

And I know the track is Adelaide, and i'm pretty certain it was run by TWR, can anyone tell me what race the estate was racing in when the photo below was taken?

Any help will be great

It was raced by Tony Scott in the Australian Super Touring Championship in 1995. Probably the grand prix support race.

Yeah that'll be a 95 850 saloon front splitter.

They couldn't put a rear wing on the estate as it would exceed the maximum height limit.

I think thats how they used the Saloon from 1995 in the BTCC, because any advantage they gained with the extra downforce was lost with all the wings.

It's too bad they don't make a 1/18 scale model of the BTCC Volvo. I would for sure buy one!!

I have some interesting info for you.
The Estate was run by Volvo Racing Australia in 1995. It was driven by Tony Scott. It was up ahainst Audi 80 quattros, BMW 318i, Vauxhall Cavalier, Merc 180, Pug 405, Ford non-turbo Sierra.

It was not up to the task against these cars, as they had wings.

It sustained a heavy crash at Oran Park that year.

I think its best result was a 3rd at Eastern Creek.

In that year, Volvo also ran a 2 car team of 850 T5-Rs in the eastern Creeek 12 Hour. Drivers included Scott, Peter Brock, Win Percy, and another bloke whose name I can't remember.

That 850 is the 94' BTCC car, updated with the '95 spec front end. The car was the Lammers car, but was sold to the Aussie Volvo Dealer team.

Raced in Asia after Australia. In Aus it ran under TWR stewardship.

Mr Nilsson had the estate in Sweden before the season in 95, raced in a couple of races but not STCC.

Didnt know that, thought he only raced the Renault at that time before switching to the 95 Volvo. You learn something new everyday it seems.

I know this is 6 years old, but funnily enough AUTOart announced a 1/18 model of Rydells 94 and 95 Volvo BTCC cars last week.

I've seen the Nilsson Renault mentioned before- is this one of the ex-BTCC Renault Dealer Racing Lagunas, or was it locally-built in Sweden. Any pics out there?

Looking at the results in the 95/6 Touring Car Year, Nilsson is listed as racing an 850 at the Jyllandsring in August 95. Is this the estate or a saloon?

By co-incidence I've had some pictures emailed to me today from Johnny Haraldsson who owns the car.

When it returned from Australia it was rebuilt and put back into 1994 BTCC livery. Rickard Rydell did a few shakedown laps at Knutstorp and then it was put into storage, where it has remained ever since.

What was the car that was on show at Autosport International a few years back, was that just a show car?
