Incident at Queensland Raceway
Just received a phone call from a source - apparently a road car just went through the gravel at turn 3 at Queensland Raceway and over the wall.
Both driver and passenger are OK but apparently the car is a write-off. Oh - the driver? Craig Lowndes. |

At this stage haven't been able to find out anything more - but, I understand, Motorsport News has one of their people at the track today - so maybe a bit more info from Phil Branigan when they know more?

Just spoke to a friend who is there. It's the Triple 8 sponsor ride day but the gearbox went in the Lowndes car so he was doing sponsor rides in the promo car and it ran out of brakes and ended up on the tyre wall.

News travels fast!
The car has damage on the drivers side and the front, they kept driving the car around on the back of a tow truck so no one could get pics then put a cover over it, although someone did manage to get a couple that I saw. |

Was there a passenger in the car at the time?

For a $10 million dollar team, ride laps in the promo car (not toughened up to take regular rides?) before it promptly goes kaput seems extremely rough and substandard, very dangerous.

Have to laugh in a way - was on the phone to 'a source' when his phone received an SMS about this - so I guess considering I posted just after the SMS came in the dust probably hadn't settled when I hit Send!
Have to slow down a bit in future (me, that is) |

The promo cars have (most of the ones I've seen anyway) roll cages installed, along with 5 point harnesses. Don't know what the speed difference is between them (they tend not to have 5litre V8's in them, unless this is a special V8SC built car that just doesn't get raced anymore.)

I heard from someone who is up there doing a ride day, that the lowndes car had broken down for some reason, so they were taking passengers in an xr6 all painted up etc like the real thing. After a couple of rides, he was coming down the back straight and put his foot on the brake. When nothing happened he turned around to the passengers and asked them to hang on!!! He then careered through the sand trap, hit the tyre barrier and ended up on top of the tyres!!
Well done CL!! I love the fact tat he turned around to tell the passengers they were crashing half way into the crash itself!! |

Sounds like ride days and ride cars will be under scrutiny from the powers that be in the not too distant future. In the last 3 months 3 shunts all involving passengers. DJR at Oran Park (one badly damaged car) Tasman at Winton (car close to a write off apparently) now this one at Queensland. One court case could end ride days and rides for ever. I would like to bet pretty heavily too that the 80% rule will now be strictly enforced. Though that wouldn't of helped in the Lowndes case.

I guess thats why they have 'waivers' for you to sign before get into the car so you cannot take them to court in the event of a mishap.
Anybody who gets into a car for a spin around a track must recognise there is a small chance of something going totally wrong. Having said that I wouldn't have wanted to be in a stock XR6 Turbo and running out of brakes coming into turn 3. I am sure it will be something the passengers never forget |

Funny you never ever hear any problems with ride cars at the HPDC driving facility... that has been there 10 years+

If GTR is implying that the problem might not actually lie with the cars, then i totally agree...
Whether its an incompetent driver (ducks the flames) or team, ride cars shouldnt be crashing. |
