What is the differnce between the Porsche 996 and Porsche 911 GT3'rs?

Ive just been thinking about this, and I cant draw any conclusions the cars appear to be identical. Does any particular model have a slight areodynamic advantage? or a horsepower advantage? Ive also noticed that the ALMS is full of 911's and FIA GT 996's.

So can anyone think of anything?

Thats what I thought also, just seems odd. To me at least that the model is another name. All it serves to do is confuse people that are new to sportscar racing, especially events like Le Mans where both the 996 and 911 are running.

I think 996 is just the current version of the 911. The last one was 993...

It's just a name change. Here, we're a bit too think, I suppose, to immediatly notice the difference between the original 911 series, the 993 series, and the 996 series... So they just let us believe a Porsche is a Porsche (that's Porsh, in Americanese ).

So, no, leaving the factory, a 996 GT3RS and a _current_, water-cooled 911 GT3RS, are identical.

This year thank goodness the FIA GT series has 20 GT entries and 18 NGT entries, 10 of which are Porsches and the rest Ferrari 360s, now this is a lot better than it was last year, there were only about 5 or 6 Ferrari 360s at most.

Porsche say the Carrera will not be raced.

So I guess we'll see it on a grid somewhere soon......

'Round these parts, there fella, we just call 'em a Poorsh. But that's another thread.

To the Euro types, it's still a 911 on the street, correct? I thought to idea of the GT3-Rs, if they're still called that, was to sell 911s. Some ignorant rich guy is going to the Porsche dealership askin' for a 996. In the States, I bet most salesman would swear up and down that no such Porshce exists. At the Nissan dealership in my home town, they haven't the slightest inkling about the Skyline GT-R, but that's a differant story.

996 is the factorys internal model code for the current 911-version, just as 993 and 964 was before it (and also 986 is the internal number code for the Boxster). Therefore the correct name of the GT3 is 911 GT3RS. But the current generation of the 911 is mostly referred to as 996 to make it clear what generation of the 911 we're talking about. And perhaps that's why the GT3RS is sometimes called 996. But why 911 and 996 in the same entrance sheets? I've no idea, it's the same car.
Does anyone follow me? I'm not sure I do...

I think the factory marketing guys used the '911' term as the generic label for that class of Porsche, which furthers the confusion.
