[WTCC] Race 15 & 16 - Istanbul (TUR), 23/24 September 2006

At 23/24 September the WTCC circus will move to the beautiful circuit of Istanbul. At least that's planned but because of an incident during the podium ceremony at the Turkish F1 GP the event is uncertain. At 19 September FIA will decide.

If the event gets the green light the live coverage of Eurosport starts at 13:00h and 14:14h CET. So don't forget to tune in 2 hours earlier! You have been warned!

i'm not sure how much truth there is in this, kidzer might be able to shed more light but i was informed that ryan sharp will not be racing for JAS anymore as they have not continued ryans contract for the rest of the season! why this is i do not know!

if anyone could find anymore info on this that would be great!

If that's the case, reason why is simple...money. He would be being dropped because of results just lack of cash flow.

Ryan's budget problems were mentioned on Eurosport, so it's not a mystery.

I hope that the Turkey race takes place, sadly, I will have no way of watching it anymore, as I doubt my uni cell has Eurosport as standard

Spoke to Ryan regarding this when he was sitting in with me for Saturday's WSR race commentary at Donington...

He was having meetings with his sponsors to decide where they'd get best value for money for the remainder of the season...

As a driver, he said, he'd obviously try to stay in the car but he was also looking at a broader view.

With his background, perhaps there are moves afoot to return to single-seaters or possibly to try and move up in the WTCC...

I didn't press him on details - those will presumably become evident in the fullness of time - but if he does disappear from WTCC, I will be disappointed...

It's always great, as a British commentator, to have some Brits performing well... and Ryan has frequently been worth as much of a shout as Andy, Rob, Tommo and the rest

From the series Newsletter:

ONLY ONE CAR FOR JAS AND WIECHERS
JAS Motorsport’s Scottish driver Ryan Sharp will not take part in the next WTCC meeting at Istanbul. Sharp, currently second in the Yokohama Independents’ Trophy, behind Tom Coronel, is due to be back at the wheel of his Honda Accord for the last two meetings of the season in Valencia and Macau.
Wiechers-Sport will run only one BMW 320i in Istanbul, for Diego Romanini; they are currently negotiating with a few drivers to run both their cars at Valencia and Macau.

And it's always great to have a Scot in the WTCC too. I don't think there has been a Scottish WTCC driver before Ryan Sharp ?

I too hope the event goes ahead even after the F1 events, as it's a brilliant track.

Thanks also FIRE for posting up the predictions comp, as it happened my access to Tenths this week was limited.

Yeah, would be a shame to loose a WTCC race because of a political issue...

Still, I dont expect WTCC cars to be as spectacular looking through Turn 8 as F1/GP2/DTM....although, they could well be their own brand of spectacular

A shame Sharp will miss this event. I hope he will return for Spain or Macau (double points?), in that case he's still able to finish in 2nd place.

Last year was normal points? Farfus and Huisman were both awarded 10 for their wins, sounds usual to me.

Previous years Macau wasn't a part of the FIA European Touring Car Championship - so no points!

You must be far older than me to remember that.

I had actually forgot about the previous WTCC, so was only thinking of the previous several years of European / World champs.

Oh, I'm much older..

There's a long history of ETCC and WTCC going back decades.. In fact, if you include ETCC.. then just off the top of my head both Jimmy Clark and Jackie Stewart drove in ETCC (or equivilant), IIRC.. and Tom W was an ETCC champion in '84.. ah, thems were the days.. 500km races, including one around the old Brno track, 10 miles on public roads..

But I digress... (during the war as Uncle Albert might have it..)... for the '02 plus years, I can't think of any other Scots than Ryan..

Wet session of course...times were a bit luck of the draw. Roal Motorsport to watch for certainly.

Muller (Y) best placed of the championship runners, time to get his challenge back on track with Priaulx, Thompson & Farfus in the midfield.
