pro ban's
Ok, What should I be using to wash my ProBans, Got a horrible feeling earlier that normal washing powder might not be good for them!

I've always used a normal nonbio, so just about anything off the shelf is OK, just don't tumble dry them

My understanding is that the non-bio's are okay for use, Persil, Fairy or whatever brand you choose. Just not their regular powders.

Does that mean that our fires have to be below 50 C?

Instructions on label in new set of probans
washable & dry cleanable do not use soap or soap powder do not use hypochlorite bleach wash with suitable detergents only do not tumble dry 60 degrees warm iron Washing instructions on user instruction leaflet supplied with probans identical apart from avoid over drying low temperature - residual moisture in tumble dryer 10-15% you should be aware that the flame retardancy of proban treated fabric is only guaranteed for upto 50 washes ive been to a few hillclimbs lately where some marshals probans seem to be faded is this due to the age of the garment or incorrect washing ? how frequent do marshals replace probans ( not just because of extra pies being deposited around the middle ) ?? andrew |

when I used to work in the steel industry we were supplied with proban overalls (although they were grey ). We were told not to wash them ourselves and they were regularly cleaned (dry-cleaned IIRC) for us.
Still if you follow the washing instructions correctly you should be OK. |

I wash my probans in normal non bio i find the AWS ones tend not to fade. and there is a spray fire retardent you can get to re-fireproof.
I change my probans every 5-6 years. As i put on some weight last yeasr had to replace. I use AWS better quality. |

I must have been unlucky with my AWS probans. The metal zip kept slipping down, the material seemed prety thin and wore quickly. I kept them for about 2 years before dumping them and going back to standard issue

Asked AWS this very question.
Their reply was its fine to wash them in normal washing powder on a cool wash. Hang up to dry. Couldnt agree more with danccooke. First time I've had overalls that go round the chest and still leave the tackle where it should be. Last edited by HBAM; 10 Aug 2004 at 20:41. |

Solution to the problem is to become an observer and delegate all the mucky jobs to some-one else.

WASHING PROBAN
Hi Guys (and girls)and to all AWS RACEWEAR valued customers, I hope the following infomation helps.
Proban treated garments can be washed in any conventional washing machine. It is recommended that garments are washed at 60C for mixtures of coloured goods and 40C for mixtures of white and pale colours. The wash programme used should be that for non-colour fast cotton articles. For articles that are heavily stained a short pre-soak may be found useful (up to 2 hours at room temp). The following washing powders may be used to launder Proban treated garments. Ariel, Daz, Tide, Fairy Non Bio, Surf automatic, Dreft, Surf, Persil System Automatic. Some brands now state 'suitable for FR fabrics'. The following washing powders, which are soap based must not be used to launder Proban treated garments, Acdo, Lux soap flakes, Persil. The use of soap in hard water areas can result in soap deposits, which adversely affect the flame-retardant performance of Proban fabrics. In addition, Hypochloride based household bleaches MUST NOT BE USED. These include Domestos, Vortex and all supermarket blends. For further info on washing Proban treated garments please call me,I will be pleased to send info as supplied to ourselves. Having now been running AWS for the past 3 years there is one point that causes me concern. A number of customers refer to Proban treated garments as 'Fireproofs', this I feel may lead to a false sense of security, Proban treatment makes the garment Flame retardant, not fireproof. Proban treated overalls are ideally worn with Flame retardant underwear for extra protection. Once again, thank you to all Marshals for doing a grand job, take care and good luck to you all. Nick - AWS |

Thanks for that explanation, think that covers EVERYTHING!
Get a set of xxLarge ones and then sit in the bath with them on so they shrink to fit!!! (DON'T!) Just one small point, On mine, the velcro belt you do up when you put them on seems to be to big for the size of the overalls (or maybe I need to eat more pies!) |
