Melandri breaks leg
Melandri breaks leg in first session of new season
Marco Melandri became the first casualty of the 2003 MotoGP World Championship when he ditched his Yamaha M1 in the first free practice session at Suzuka this morning and broke his right tibia and femur. The 250cc World Champion was airlifted from the circuit clinic to the local Mie General Medical Centre by helicopter for a full examination and operation, but early indications are that he has an open break on the tibia near his ankle, where the bone joins with the fibula, whilst the femur bone (in the upper part of the leg) seems to be a clean fracture. The Fortuna Yamaha rider had completed just 8 laps of the Suzuka circuit when he crashed at the fast right hander after the hairpin. The session was red flagged as his stricken M1 was cleared from the circuit and the rider was stretchered to an ambulance. Doctors at the scene predicted that he will probably require between 45 and 90 days to make a full recovery. www.motogp.com 90 days huh? thats about round 10! 16 rounds in the year... **** ay |

Sounds like a very messy injury, broken femurs take a long time to heal. 45 days sounds excessively optimistic. As Abe is still contracted to Yamaha as their test rider (correct me if I'm wrong), I'm pretty sure he'll be the one to take over. Will he be competing in this race, as a wildcard, or a further factory entry?

apparently he was only going to race in about 4 (at the most) races as a wildcard.. no body else is really qualified are they? Norick might well have a total season on his hands now!?

abe deserves the ride, and is the only real choice as far as i can see, he should have had a full time ride in the 1st place

v.d. Goorbergh is also a possibility, though a remote one. He rides for a Yamaha team in Supersnail, and both Fortuna Yamaha and Jurgen's team are based in Milan. Should not be too difficult to arrange something. But I agree that Abe will (and should) be first choice.

I think it's a shame for Melandri. Didn't even get past his first real session before stacking the bike, and to receive this sort of injury has screwed his season completely.
As for reserve rider, there is no other choice but to put Abe on the machine. He should have been on the grid anyway, but now it's the perfect opportunity for him to get on there and prove the teams wrong. If the chance arises... |

A rough start for the rookie Melandri to begin his Moto GP championship. Nicky Hayden and Andrew Pitt also crashed during qualifying.

Aw man what a sad start for him.
Oh well I hope that the rest makes it in one piece, injuries means no points and less excitement. |
