CART racing series getting a new look

Auto racing: With two new sponsors on board, logo receives an overhaul.
By A.J. Perez, Staff writer
CART appears to have given those attending the 33rd annual Auto Racing All-American Team banquet in Pomona on Saturday night a look at its new logos days ahead of their official unveiling.

On page 10 of the program in the lower-right corner is what looks to be CART's new logo featuring the open-wheel racing series' new major sponsors Bridgestone and Ford. CART was forced to change the name of the series when FedEx pulled out as the title sponsor after the 2002 season .

The CART (Championship Auto Racing Teams) logo also gets a new look as officials apparently have moved away from the check ered flag graphic featuring the colors red, white and blue.

The formal unveiling of the new logo is scheduled for Wednesday.

Designers of the new series logo had a tough task in front of them. CART's main racing series is now known as the "Bridgestone presents the Champ Car World Series powered by Ford.' That's 10 words to fit into a fairly limited space.
Merrill Cain, a CART spokesman, wouldn't confirm that what appears in the program were the new logos at the banquet put on by the American Auto Racing Writers and Broadcasters Association.

The Indy Racing League, CART's American open-wheel racing rival, announced it was going to rename its main series the IndyCar Series last week.

A source told the Press-Telegram in November that CART CEO and President Chris Pook may challenge the IRL for use of the term IndyCar. Neither the IRL or CART could use the name IndyCar since the two entered into an agreement in 1996.

That agreement ended on Dec.31 and IRL chief Tony George seized the name without a fight. CART was content with the Champ Car moniker and announced the new name for the series weeks ago.

That's what the article said. Pook doesn't want the Indycar appellation.

A WORD ABOUT CHAMP CARS by Robin MIller

CART embarks on its 25th season this year with a new logo to be introduced this week and a fresh title known as Bridgestone Presents The Champ Car World Series Powered by Ford.
That will be a mouthful for television commentators and newspaper headline writers, but obviously CART wants to salute its marketing partners.

And, considering CART's history, the term Champ Cars is perfect for a series that prides itself on the most diverse competition in all of motorsports.
