I agree that Morbidelli was probably one of the worst. Did Jean-Christophe Boullion (sp) ever race in F1 - coz he was poor aswell?

JCB, I think, tested for Williams in F1 - hence the seat at Renault in 1999. I remember Cox interviewing him, asking him why he had chosen the BTCC, He said cos it's the place to be. How wrong was he, just when the BTCC started getting really bad.
Given a few more seasons, I think he'd have done better. |

Best would definatly have to Tarquini.
Worst would probably have to be Jan Lammers. |

JCB
Boullion also did a few F1 races for Sauber in 1995, in place of Karl Wendlinger. I think he did well, if I remember rightly he came 6th i the 1995 Italian grand prix after starting from the pitlane. I'd sayt he best in BTCC was Smokin Jo Winklehock, followed by Tarquini.

Then of course there was Derek Warwick and Nigel Mansell, depends how far back you wish to go?
I seem to remember reading the Jim Clarke drove a Lotus Cortina in the series as it was then, and Graham Hill in a Mini. |

But I bet he can't stand this F1 record that he currently owns: http://www.forix.com/asp/pi.asp?z=0&k=0&l=0&c=1010 |

Yes, that's correct RIKB, Jim Clark raced a Cortina and at the same time competed in F1 I think. Believe it or not he is a distant relation of mine, though we're not 'blood related'.
That was interesting to see that table Luca Badoer, just look at the number of very succesful TC drivers in there, Tarquini, Larini, Schneider even!! Not pre-qualified [ Top 50 ] Cla Drivers Total 1 G.Tarquini 25 2 Roberto Moreno 22 3 Nicola Larini 17 4 Aguri Suzuki 16 5 Bertrand Gachot 16 6 Yannick Dalmas 14 7 Bernd Schneider 14 8 Claudio Langes 14 9 P.Ghinzani 13 10 P.M.Chaves 13 |

Depends what you mean about Lammers - he was 1983 Renault Turbo European Champion (is that a Touring Car?), plus he was quick on occasion in F1 and Indycars (he led an Indycar race in 85 I think) plus he was always fast in sportscars.
Worst TC driver without a doubt was that merchant banker Palmer. That year in the BTCC showed him up for the arse he is. How Audi were taken in to give him all that money I will never know - put me off buying an Audi I can tell you! Mobidelli has won Touring Car races in Italy and Europe in his time - how does that make him nads? |

Ooh I forgot about JCB. I agree, he was one of the worst, maybe second worst, to Morbidelli.
Jan Lammers actually finished 5th and 6th in several races in 1994, coming up from the middle of the field, so I don't think it's fair to say he was terrible, besides, he was in a car that wasn't nearly as good as the competition. |

Morbidelli in the BTCC was bad, but yes, he was good in the italian and european championships. Johnny Cecotto also drove F1 for a little bit... |

I was talking more about Farmer Palmers continual carping - he really had a chance to whime that year, even more so than when he had the bad Tyrrell in 88. God it used to annoy me when he would be in Autospurt every week during 83-84 whining about how he and only he was Britains next hope for a world Champ.... as if the world owed him a living - in fact that went back as far as when he was racing a Marcos and in F3. There were so many other good brits at that time - Dumfries, Pratt, Fish, Reid, Davies. If you add in the amount of careers he ruined with his amzingly bent and biased FPA series that man has done a lot of damage to our sport. Johhny Cecotto was also a world champ in bike racing, I saw him on a prog about Sheene and Roberts on "Granada Men and Munters" the other night and he was the business on bikes. |

It'd be sensible to point out that Morbidelli was at Volvo in a year when the team were desperate for Rydell to win, after coming close in 95, 96 & 97.
The team did not want to waste their chance, before Morbidelli, Rydell's team-mates were really quite equal with him. |

Palmer didn't do to badly in 91, although the move he pulled on Hoy at Thruxton at the second last round was a bit silly. Palmer wasn't to bad in a Touring, he was very competitive in the 1983 Silverstone TT in a BMW 635csi, teamed with James Weaver that day.
I firgot about Clark, he would have to be one of the best. |

He was reasonably successful in a BMW before his Volvo stint and I recall seeing him return to his successes after returning behind the wheel of a BMW again! For some reason, he just couldn't adapt to FWD. |

Julian Bailey could have done well in the BTCC, if he didn't waste his time in the under funded (after Rouse left) Toyota's.
Alan Jones, in Australia has put in some good performances, like at Bathurst in 96, when he led until the car caught fire, and he did ok in qualifying at Bathurst in 1997 in the Williams Renault Laguna. In South America, Oscar Laurrari (drove F1 in late 80s or early 90s) is very dominate in their Super Touring series. |

I think Bailey could have done better in 95/6 in a better machine, as could Tim Sugden.
