Very cool starting grid, Pat's still on form and shocker of shockers, Jimmy's on the front row! They must have finally figured out how to set that thing up! Nelson outqualified Wilson.
Notice the close times between many teammates. I'd say this is further evidence of what we knew going into this race, setup is the most important factor. |

Well done to Patrick and Jimmy. This race is going to be close very close the top 16 drivers covered within a second.
Looking at some drivers in qualifing they huged the white line all around the track even on the straits trying to find the shortest way around the track, so much grip it looked so easy for them and i would not be surprised to see them 4 wide at some stage of the race. |

Is that the first time Wilson has been out-qualified by his team mate? (Err, this season of course).
Good grid, hopefully a good race. Shame for Servia coming off of that good result last time out. Lavin's oval speed might encourage him to pi...I mean, depart to the IRL for next season |

A second covers the grid, which can easily be lost in one slight mistake. When you have a one-mile oval and quick laps as a result, the grid tends to be shuffled much more, which explains some of those strange results.
Lavin is already proven on ovals, but ChampCar needs his Corona money to have 18 cars this year, and might do next year. |

According to Bourdais running on the oval is not challenging and all one has to do is put the throttle down. There is also talk that there isn't much of a draft and that passing may be at a minimum. We may end up with an IRL type race where the drivers run side by side until the laps run out; yaaawwwnnn!!!. Hopefully the push to pass will liven it up a bit. I'll be watching of course but I am not overly excited about the package that Champ Car is using in Vegas. Here's hoping that I am wrong and it does provide good racing.

For the ovals does champcar use a qualifying session or do they do it NASCAR style where the cars go out one at a time, I believe they used the NASCAR method at Fontana last time they were there.

That's how ChampCar and IndyCar always qualify on ovals.
