Power Steering in LMP cars?
When did power steering begin to make inroads in ALMS/LMS protos? I can only remember the Zytek team being happy when the weight limit for LMP675 cars got raised to 700 or 725kg because that meant they could afford the extra weight to put in a power steering unit for Gentlemen drivers. But of course I can't remember when and I don't know how prevalent it was prior to that in the LMP900 class.

What is the differance between a Group C car which didnt have power steering , and drivers didnt complain ..... now they all have it . Just something else to go wrong .
Do these cars really need power steering ..... and if so why ? If Group C didnt need , why does P1/2 ? Just wondering . |

Factory teams have had power steering for at least the last 15 +years that I know of.
I think drivers probably did complain in group C days but now the aero, tyre and more aggressive suspension geometry produce significantly higher load than ever before. |

Plus at longer races it will relieve some of the workload from the driver. Keeping them fresher for longer.

Front aero on most Group C cars was weak and less than half as efficient as today's average proto. 3.5 Protos might have used it, or they might have been like the MG Lolas that got very heavy in the Porsche curves without it and worked overtime to have it fitted afterwards (LM2002 and ALMS teams). The R8 probably had it from the start, and other serious P900 projects also did.
