Arrows get 2002 Cosworth?
According to reports in today's Sunday Times, the long rumoured engine deal between Jaguar / Ford Cosworth and Arrows team boss Tom Walkinshaw, is due to be announced this week. Formula1.com has previously reported on the deal on several occasions.
It is now several weeks since it was announced by both sides that Asiatech would no longer be supplying engines to Arrows next year. Over the Silverstone weekend Walkinshaw stated "I hope by the next Grand Prix (Germany) we'll be able to make an announcement ". The deal is meant to be financially attractive at a cost of possibly as little as £5m. The specification of the engine is meant to be the same as the Jaguar will be running next year, so that the prancing horse will have another car with which to compare the performance of the rest of the package. Given that it is thought the engine deal has been done for some time, the question remains as to why it has not yet been announced. Speculation surrounds the possibility of Arrows' need to secure financing for the deal as it is thought that they did not pay for this year's Asiatech deal. There has also been some surprise that the two parties are working together again, as it has been alleged that the previous relationship between Jaguar and TWR, while enormously successful at a technical level, did not end on the best of terms. _____________________Formula1.com well, for that litle money Arrows get a great engine, this years Jag-Cossie has 40 bhp more than the Asiatech, so Arrows could be moving up the grid next year, the new designer,Nicolo Petrucci(ex Ferrari) is very good according to Jos...... |

Yeah, but what if next years cossie is ANOTHER 40bhp up on this year? That would leave arrows in the same place as now. Customer engines must be avoided if it can be helped.

The deal looks quite interesting to me, though - looks like someone at Jaguar is blaming the engines for their bad form, and Ford is saying it's the chassis....what better yardstick than giving someone else an engine and seeing how they do!? |

It strikes me as a bad move by Ford. If Jaguar comes out looking bad, the whole corporation suffers. TWR is only lacking a decent engine and some stability to put it together.
Rahal and Lauda must have a lot of faith in next year's developements or they need money for the team because Dearborn's supply is too lean. |

Well Eero, Lauda and Rahal don't decide on those engine deals, that's done in Ford's headquarters, and the reason is that Ford aren't happy with Jag's performance......
and, Bononi: Probably Prost, OR Minardi..... |

This is news?!?!?! Tsk, it was confirmed weeks ago. I don't see it making much difference though.
Prost will take the Asiatech engines, Minardi will have customer Ferraris. |

Considering Ford said they would never again give out customer engines (Minardi take care of their own Ford powerplants by the way), this is an amazing turnaround, and one which could have detrimental effects on Jaguars standing considering the closeness between Arrows and Jaguar at many of the races this year.
As for Asiatech, Prost is the likely home for the new engines as the Ferrari powerplant is too expensive although Minardi could be another home, but they have so many to choose from anyway. BTW Minardifan, you have yourself thorougly convinced that Minardi WILL get Ferrari power!!! Well, I hope so too. Just to get the car off the end of the grid would be a fine achievement. |

I'm not at all convinced about it, I'm just being optimistic about it.
What I'm more convinced about is Prost being supplied by Asiatech, thus leaving the Ferraris for Minardi. Prost are for sale, Asiatech want to buy a team. Hmmmmm. Last edited by Minardi fan; 23 Jul 2001 at 13:27. |

I don't see how this would be detremental to Ford/Jaguar. It gives them another platform on which to develop the Cosworth, and it gives them a measure of their own chassis development. Good competition is good. I would like to see some cross polination of ideas between these two very interesting teams. (and maybe a swap to get Jos into a Jag??)
I would like to see Jag, Arrows (and Jordan) move up the way Williams did this year. The next couple F1 seasons could be veeeeery interesting. |

Jaguar will move nowhere next season, neither will Arrows. Both are firmly cemented in the lower midfield.
