FIA Press Release re: Brazilian Grand Prix 2003
Hi folks
The following press release was issued by the FIA this morning: "The FIA has received evidence which suggests that, contrary to the information supplied by the time-keepers at the Brazilian Grand Prix, car no. 11 (Fisichella) had started his 56th lap before the race was stopped. If this proves to be the case, the race classification would be that at the end of the 54th lap and not at the end of the 53rd lap as published. In accordance with Article 179(b) of the International Sporting Code, the stewards of the Brazilian Grand Prix will re-convene on Friday 11 April at 11.00 hrs at the FIA headquarters in Paris to review the results of the event. All competitors who would be affected by any change to the classification are being invited to attend. Paris, April 9, 2003" |

Looks liek justice will be done. A lot of the public are unhappy about this, as it's pretty clear that, having started lap 56, Fisichella is the rightful winner.

We don't know for sure he did start lap 56 - looks like we'll have to wait until Friday for the evidence to be looked at.
I am VERY uncomfortable about a race result being changed days after the event - particularly given that the "parties involved" accepted the result on the day. |

But if he does get the win would it be the slowest average speed since racing began? I mean a whole five days?
I didn't know he'd crossed the line so if it is the case then not only were the Stewards lax in putting out the reds (they new the track was blocked) they haven't even checked their electronic timing. Inept or what? Also I bet nobody slags them off like they did to Silverstone that wet April. |

i dont like the idea of counting back two laps, or counting back at all.
Cant they calculate what the race order is without making it so damn techincal. To avoid this they should not allow people who couldnt finish the race, Alonso and Webber with points positions. Or hang on, Fisichellas can blew up didnt it. Forget that. |

I'm still trying to get clarification whether it is the same stewards who presided over Silverstone 1998. My favourite chief steward of all time - the lovely Nazir Hoosein - usually oversees the Brazilian GP and the British GP so I'm wondering if this may be another of Naz's "specials"

It's not 1st April?
How difficult is it to know who won? |

If they declare the results for lap 54 how does that leave the top eight. I think Webber for one won't be there but were there any other passes made on that lap?

Seems likely to me that Fisi would have crossed the line on time, given how far ahead of Alonso he was before the crash, and the slight delay before the red flag.

By my reckoning - this isn't official - if the result is declared after 54 laps this is what happens...
1) Fisichella 2) Raikkonen 3) Alonso 4) Coulthard 5) Frentzen 6) Villeneuve 7) Ralf Schumacher 8) Trulli 9) Da Matta (+1 lap) All other drivers DNF Webber would probably be classified as a finisher as he'd completed the required %age of the winners laps - I'm not sure whether he'd be ahead of Da Matta or not. His accident was on 54, and Da Matta would have only completed 53, so he may get 9th. |

My other question is: On what lap did Webber crash? Or did these guys actually pass Mark Webber when he spun at turn 3? I'm going to try to find my tape. |

But you do need to take the results at a fixed point I mean what if two cars are side by side at the time of the red flag without the transponders to tell you who was in front how could you tell? And as someone pointed out in another thread it would be silly to declare the race at lap 54 Sector 2 All this said either way you have to feel sorry for Fisi at the end of the day even if he gets the win, He didn't get to stand on the top of the podium so it can never feel right |
