Brock Yates Likes Helio!

If you haven't read Brock Yates' take on Indy, go over to Speedvision and check it out. I think the man is mellowing in his old age! However, I wonder why he thinks Helio will not go to F1 as soon as he can get a good drive?

I hesitate to offer one possibility (lest I be branded hopelessly naive): Maybe he actually realizes he has a very good thing going in CART and doesn't want to risk it.

I think Yates was right on in his entire article. he is usually caustic and controversial and usually for the sake of it. For those of you who saw the post-race celebration last night on ESPN2 you saw the Helio that was ultra-gracious and diverted a huge amount of the limelight from him to his team and those who helped him to reach this level in his career. I think thta this win and Long Beach win are going to bring him into serious contention for the CART title this year.

Helio's no fool! He realizes that autoracing is a team sport, and when you can get your crew behind you and supporting you, they'll work to give you those few extra horses so that they will be there when you need them.

Part of it is the commercialism in the sport as well though. The sponsors want to hear there product mentioned when their driver wins.

It is really noticable in the american series (CART,IRL,NASCAR) where they thank the "such-and-such" crew and "so-and-so" engines and ... etc.

If you listen to JPM in the F1 interviews he still does the same but very few of the other F1 drivers actually mention the sponsor names.
