Historic Sandown November 2002
Looks like another great Historic Meeting, anyone want to list some notable cars/drivers attending? I want to come down "south off the border", can anyone advise on cheap places to stay and wheteter trains run to Sandown regularly? What are the best turns for action? All input appreciated - damn Motorsport can be good!!

Dont know for sure but Goerge kertsel will have his Bugatti 35 there. As for accomadation the Sandown Motor Inn is walking distance from the track and Turn 1 or turn 7 (the old turn 12) is the best bets.

I'd be expecting a solid turn out of F5000's, especially from NZ. Hopefully this time it doesn't rain and they all run. Also that when the F5000's are on, I'm not in a flippin Stewards enquiry, like I was last year twice.
There's supposedly a GroupA/C race, too. 275 GTB-4, there's a few motels along the Princes Highway that are all walking distance. But failing that, and you train it in, Sandown Park Station is literally a walk off platform and into track set up. You want a Dandenong, Pakenham or Cranbourne train. You could also get off at Station before, which is Springvale and walk about 750 metres. On occasions Sandown Park station's locked up and you cant get in from the platform. If you're getting off at Springvale, then the station before is Westall, so you know. There's also a bus along the highway that stops just prior to the flyover into the track. |

There will be a Group C race this year with all sorts of original cars from all sorts of manufacturers. I know cos I'm one of them. I can't wait!!!

Historic Sandown Report (2002)
Historic Sandown Races (better late than never) and the All Mini Race (9-10 Nov 02)
Sandown Historics were a blast! The eight and half hours each way on the bus was not! I went down to Flag Marshal and was looked after very well by our Mexican compadres. Saturday’s events were very entertaining and Sundays racing even better. The Group C race was great with a QLD XC Falcon Hardtop winning (ex-Everlast Canberra car) followed by the Frank Binding XD Falcon (Army reserve camouflaged) and the ex-Brock # 25 Torana liftback third. Ex mini legend Bob Holden circulated well towards the back of the pack in his Mk1 Escort. In the Group N races a bunch of Minis bulked up the field tremendously, but the very quick 350 cubic inch Chev Camaro (1969 Z28) of Paul Stubber from WA absolutely blitzed em. Good to see something else win this class besides a Ford Mustang or a XY/XW Falcon GT! The Formula 5000 TransTasman race was a pearler! About 20 of the monsters plus supporting open wheelers made up a big field. Half were Kiwis. None of those high-speed dentist drill F1 sounds here, just real low down ground shaking scream, rumble and blatt like a real racing car should sound! Awesome to behold. A very large field of MG sports cars raced several times on the weekend (could have been due to the fact that the MG Car Club of Victoria ran the meeting!). Three MGB V8s dominated proceedings with one 4700cc example running away from the rest. Other sports and open wheel categories included some visitors from NSW who acquitted themselves well. The Bib Stillwell MINI Garage sponsored the All Mini Race and provided a bunch of new MINIs as course cars. I came very close to getting a run around the circuit in a new MINI Cooper, but had to settle for a lap standing behind the cab of the biggest tilt-tray truck I have ever seen (very quickly driven I might add). The All Mini race was outstanding, talk about close racing, the entire field of 30 odd cars spread out over only half the 3.1km track right to the end. A minimum of carnage (I like that). Like a swarm of angry bees, bouncing off kerbs and launching themselves into space with there little tails sliding around everywhere. I had a grin from ear to ear all through the race. First Mini home was Jason Armstrong from SA (77), then Chris Ellis TAS (19), Roger Howard (129), Jim Runciman (16) and Ted Brewster (42). Don’t know where Henry Draper from Northern Mini Parts came, but his number 37 Mini was very fast all weekend. A great weekend. |

Norm Beechey at Sandown
I met a middle aged guy who claimed to be Norm Beechey's son, Adam.
He said at the Historic Sandown meeting Norm did a few demo laps in his Camaro while Adam was driving the Impala. They had a bit of a coming together causing some damage to the Camaro. Can anyone confirm this??? I have never heard of Norm having a son and I am wondering if the guy "off the planet"!!! Thanks, Chris. www.drive.to/beechey |
