NASCAR Cup Round 8: Aaron's 499, Talladega Superspeedway
So, you thought the restrictor plate racin' and the two-car tandem was a bit on the crazy side at Daytona this past February. Well let me tell you, it ain't nothin' compared to what we'll be treated to at the good ol' haunted grounds of Talladega this Sunday.
Yes boys and girls, it's time for the Yer All Lunatics 499, the Old Indian Burial Grounds 499 or, as it's been called in more recent times, the Aaron's 499 at Talladega Superspeedway. 46 brave souls have decided to challenge the 2.66 mile beast (entry list at Jayski), including Michael Waltrip and Steve Park, meaning three drivers will be forced to go home after qualifying. There will be two practice sessions on Friday with qualifying held on Saturday before the Nationwide race. Pre-race show starts at 12:00pm/ET (18:00 CET) on Sunday, with the green flag scheduled to drop around 1:19pm/ET (19:19 CET). FOX will air the race in the US, while Viasat Motor/Viasat Motor HD will air the race in Sweden and Premier Sports will air the race in the UK. This will be the 84th race at Talladega Superspeedway. Jeff Gordon is the now active driver with the most victories, six in total (Dale Earnhardt Sr. is the all-time most successful driver at Talladega with ten victories in total) while Bill Elliott is both the now active driver and all-time most successful driver with eight pole positions in total. The most successful manufacturer at Talladega is Chevrolet with 38 victories, while the most successful team is Richard Childress Racing with 11 (the most recent coming in the fall race last year when Clint Bowyer grabbed the win). More stats available at Racing-Reference's excellent Aaron's 499 Fact Sheet page. Of course you can't mention Talladega without mentioning the Big One, the huge, mythical wreck hyped by TV every time the Sprint Cup Series come to town. It might not be as big as the one in the 2002 Aaron's 499, the 1998 DieHard 500, or the 2003 Aaron's 312 Nationwide race, but expect something to happen - just ask Rick Mast, Rusty Wallace, Jimmy Horton, Ryan Newman, Elliott Sadler, Michael Waltrip & Scott Riggs, Carl Edwards and many others... So who will win on Sunday? I'll keep my fingers crossed Junior finally snaps his winless streak. |

Typical spring race at 'dega; a bunch of folks park trailers and pitch tents in Alabama and severe weather moves through in an attempt to destroy all of it (haunted burial grounds, eh rustyfan?).
Talladega weather Radar at 430est Friday still looks pretty gnarly across the "Heart of Dixie", but the rest of the weekend looks quite pleasant, with a little breeze; perfect weather for cleaning up the aftermath. Hope the damage all across the mid-west the southeast is NOT too extreme. |

Jeff Gordon grabbed his 70th career pole position with a speed of 178.248 mph. Johnson, Martin and Earnhardt Jr. rounded out the top four positions, making Hendrick Motorsports only the third team in Cup history making it a clean sweep of the two first rows in qualifying.
Lineup at NASCAR.com Just like the last couple of restrictor plate races the two-car tandems will be the order of the day tomorrow. Don't like it? Neither does Earnhardt Jr.. |

How rare is it to have a one car spin ONLY coming onto the backstretch at 'dega.
First of many of these "bump spin" deals today, surely. |
