Hi everyone
What do you think if the F1 guys releases F1 races on DVD maybe by season packages It would be great if they could start from the season 1950 and go on until 2002! Would you buy them? |

Sounds great. Sadly, I'd have to use them as beer mats - I don't have a DVD player.
I only moved from Betamax to VHS last year . |

What the hell for Hakkiman ???
Yeah, if I had the cash, I'd pick up a copy of each year. Infact, it'd be awesome. |

TO choose to buy VHS now is a little risky , as soon , VHS will be a format that probally wont be used. It will be like trying to buy a top 40 chart hit on vinyl record . Fair enough if you havent got a dvd player yet , but VHS is the format of the past really .

Yep, we should send a petition to the FIA asking for a DVD featuring all footage of F1. We've all seen various clips, but surely if anyone would have a good copy and collection, the FIA would be a good place to enquire. Or Bernie for that matter. I'd love to be able to get copies of this. They released a 6 DVD bhox set of the Bathurst 1000's history and it was well worth the money. even if the highlights from each year have huge gaps in them so there is no actual sense of how the race unfolded.Bring it on......

You'd think there would be money in it, so why isn't Bernie doing something? Sounds like a good business opportunity.

Yes it looks like it. But I'm afraid it's not. A business I mean. It is market for 1 DVD season's review, but you wont find too many anoraks willing to buy 17 DVD's a year. Sounds like a "Limited-Gold-Full season collection" completed with driver's photo's and autopgraphs, coming in a nice and expensive leather box etc-etc-etc, coming at a cost of $1,000+.....

So, where should we make the petition so that we'll be heard? I got a copy of the F1 review 2000, and I think its worth my money!

I hate to break peoples' hearts here, but there are two reasons why the DVDs of previous seasons aren't around.
First of all, there's the question of economics and marketing. The market for Formula 1 Season Reviews is a lot smaller than you might imagine. It will take a lot of remastering to get the tapes up to DVD release quality, and I'll bet someone in FOCA has been doing the sums, and has realised that the cost of digital remastering and package design prevents them from getting a suitable return from the exercise. Otherwise, you can bet your boots they'd have done it. The other problem is licensing. Season review videos exist for the 1981-2001 seasons. But before 1979, FOCA did not automatically have the copyright to the footage. That rests with the original broadcaster/film company that covered the races at the time. Which means that you would have to liaise with everyone from the BBC, CBS, Pathe News, Castrol, and that French production company that's been putting together the seventies review shows on Motors TV lately. That's if the footage even exists at all. The BBC, for example, was shocking in its lax attitude to archiving sports footage. There are tiny excerpts of races available to view, but the vast majority of the BBC's coverage has been erased, wiped, taped over. And don't forget that the TV broadcast quality is not necessarily to DVD standard. For example, the 1967 German GP was preserved on cine film, and it's still extraordinarily watchable. But I've also seen a videotape of the live broadcast of the 1967 Italian GP, and the footage is of a raceful of almost indistinguishable black-and-white cars, with image drop-outs, static and interference all over the place. Now, the '67 race was a slipstreaming classic, so us real aficionados will rejoice in the fact that it's available to see at all, but the casual DVD buyer, expecting something like what he sees on the TV every other Sunday, will be sorely disappointed. This is what we face when we're hoping and praying for some DVD motor sport. |

Surely with todays F1 digital broadcast technology as used in Europe, wouldn't be to difficult to provide a DVD season review for the past few years. Can see your point about older seasons.

I fear, TimD, that you are spot on and we won't see the old footage on DVD. I wouldn't want much, but remastering would be needed. I don't think that many extra features are needed. (The race results and championship positions would be nice though). Perhaps they could put more than one year on a DVD? (I suppose this depends on how they would market them).
I see no reason why the seasons reviews can't be put DVD from now on. Surely there is a market (maybe I'm wrong). The 2002 DVD is excellent. And, frankly, VHS is showing it's age. |

I've got a DVD called Grand Prix.... the golden years narrated by John Watson, featuring footage from the '60's / '70's and '80's
It's even got the crashes of Lauda at Nurburgring '76 and Rindt's fatal accident at Monza in '70 on it. |

Cost won't be a problem as it only costs $3-4 per DVD-5 disc or $5 for DVD-9 to have them pressed & printed, Amaray Cases @ 24p (1000 price) and covers printed £??.
That's a total maximum cost based upon a 1000 disc run. The cost of remastering existing footage to mpeg2 wouldn't be that much either, christ, Joe Bloggs can do it for under £300 now themselves! The cost would come in time and preperation, and would also depend if they want to buy decent Authoring software, or pay someone to do it properly, DVD Maestro, (which is what was used for the Matrix) was about £17K a copy. (I say was, it's not sold anymore). As you might have guessed, I've got some experience in this field And yes, there is a market, but they will probably let you buy it on crappy VHS first then release a top notch DVD about 3 years later, well I would anyway Last edited by Ian-S; 7 Aug 2002 at 00:52. |
