More on Auckland Street Circuit
Hi All
The potential circuit for an Auckland street race can be found here: http://www.stuff.co.nz/stuff/0,2106,...5a1823,00.html You can see a map of the area by going here: http://www.wises.co.nz Type in Fanshawe St, Central city for suburb, Auckland, and you will get a map of the area (you will need to zoom out one level to see the whole circuit area). Maybe some Aucklanders could comment on the area? |

So the cars would pass under the motorway twice? And there looks like there could be 2 hairpins. 1 at Fanshawe and Hobson streets, and the other when turning back onto Beaumont street.
"The street circuit would be one of the best in the world" I'm not sure about that.....yet. BJ |

Scrap this proposed circuit before it further stuffs up motorsport in this country and in NZ. This s#@t has to stop soon.

This would be a rather interesting layout, really...!
It is a rather bland circuit and, yes, it would pass under the motorway twice. Hobson Street would a be a "hairpin" - utilising the road would give four lanes on entry, 5 lanes on exit for memory. It goes past Sky City, where most teams currently stay for the Pukekohe event, past TVNZ - good roof viewing for corporates, past Les Mills Gym, and several other key landmarks - especially the multi-storeyed Immigrant bar and the Empire Hotel! The main challenge seen is that most of this area doesn't really lend itself well to either construction of corporate suites, or grandstands. Let me sleep on it... |

Makes you wonder if CAMS really do have the interest of Motorsport as a priority within their organization.

An Aucklander must have written that "Stuff" report. What's wrong with Wellington. Has port, international airport etc etc and at least it's not as frign' north as Auckland.... (or is it cos it's going to have better roads now with the increased petrol tax...)

Problem with running the Wellington Street race again is that the same circuit that was used a few years ago (alongside the harbour) wont be able to be used again due to developments along the Waterfront. Would be great to see the Street race back but it would have to be re-positioned

And we've got a perfectly good track down here, not far from the airport, that I'm sure would love to see some V8s! (But I'll throw my weight behind Wellington since I'm moving there in 3 weeks)

Street racing is alright but it takes away rounds for perment tracks which takes money away from Australian tracks which need money to keep the track going or tracks haven't had a round for years and are worthy of a race. "Mark Webber" pointed out that it is a big slap in the face to the aussie fans. Which is very true.
Also why are they going to China if they don't sell a Holden or Ford in the country? |

Because the Chinese are filling TC's pockets with plenty of money.
I wouldn't put a hell of a lot of money on the China thing happening in 2004 yet though. |

What did I say again **** scratchs head trying to remember **** So many forums and so many posts..... Ah ! That's right.... I said something like, if anyone happens to go to the Nelson Port Street Racing this Sunday might get to see NZ Caltex #07 doing promo laps if everything goes to plan. And I hope he keeps it straight. |

A street circuit makes a lot of sense. If the organising clubs see this as an opportunity and not a threat, and actually works with the people wanting to put on a street race... they will get work for the weekend, hopefully a guaranteed income for the club not at the mercy of ticket sales, and the facility wont have to have money spent on it to make the event happen.
It is quite clever if the naysayers get their heads out of their posteriors! |

And just how does this money get to the permanent circuits so racers do have somewhere to race the other 364 days a year. Are street circuits still going to be a good idea when there are no permanent circuits left.

If the organising club takes a fee for running the street circuit, that money goes back into the permanent circuit.
Its not that difficult.... |

I bet the piddling fee the club gets is nothing like the massive investment thats put into a permanent facility, and Pukekohe is a great example of that, theres been more upgrading done there since the Super cars have been racing there thans ever been put into the circuit in the other 40 odd years its been going.
If the're going to run a street circuit in Auckland may as well dig Pukekohe up and plant it in spuds, then again a spud paddock is probably a smoother surface than the track there anyways. |
