The AAA, (American Automobole Association) held the first race in Iowa at the Tri-State Fair Grounds in Burlington, on July 9, 1915. It was a 100 mile (160 km) race, won by Bob Burman. Additional AAA races were held at Des Moines Speedway, in Valley Junction on a one-mile (1.6 km) wooden board track in 1915 and 1916. The track closed and was dismantled soon after. The current IndyCar race was first held on June 24, 2007 and was won by Dario Franchitti, driving a Dallara IR05-Honda HI7R V8 for Andretti Green Racing. From 2007-2013, the race had a distance of 218.75 miles, or 250 laps, which was increased in 2014 to 262.5 miles, or 300 laps. The Iowa Speedway is the shortest track on the IndyCar calendar, at 0.875 miles long and producing a lap time of under 18 seconds, with qualifying decided by a two-lap speed average. Great post 1 as always, bjs.
Great lil track in the mid of nowhere, as is most of Iowa but a most excellent track and location for openwheel racing. Boardtracks were rampant in the early 20th century but never knew there was one in DSM. Very cool. |

Somehow, I don't think with their current form, Andretti Autosport will make it 6 in a row. |

I think that qualifying could have 3 or 4-lap runs.

It's still so damn sunny down there. I think they are trying to postpone the start so it'll be dark at least the half of the race.

The starts been waived off and the second attempt looked worse than the first.

The second start was a messy combination of single file and two-wide. Sad to see Montoya wrecking his car this early.

Not the best way to restart the race, a Debris collection yellow.

On the attendance talk, the crowd looks sparse from the helicopter shots.

It's not sold out but still looks quite ok crowd if you look at the main rows of the grandstand. And the infield parking lot definitely looks better that the ghost town in Fontana.

It'll be interesting to see how the TV figures pan out, as a race it's not quite there afaic.

Despite clipping the wall, that was a great bit of car control by Wilson.

Lots of campers and such, with the stands half to 60% full. Not bad, but the little place should be packed for this series, imho.
Decent racing so far. Let's see if it gets a little more intense when it gets full on dark. |
