Aluminium Undertray
What grade/grades of aluminium would be suitable to constructing an undertray/small diffuser, rules permit only steel or ally, so the choice is obvious and counts composites out
I would imagine something in the 5XXX or 6XXX series? but anything more specific thanks |

I think duralumin (2000 series) would be fine.

I wouldnt use 2xxx due to corrosion. 5083 or 6061 (weldable) should be ok

Hello Marcus, Tech here can be very good, some smart cookies do some posting, I am sure you will have a bit of valuable input.
Duralumin was used extensively in racing bicycle components (we have moved on since then) generally it has a clear applied to stop the milking. |

Don't want to get pinged for an off topic post so I should add that the 5000 series alloys all have good corrosion resistance with 5052 and 5083 being marine grades and excellent for self finish and even better with a polish... thanks for the responses guys, 5005 looks like the one to go for - corrosion resistance, weldable and easily formed tick the right boxes although I might get it anodised black anyway

what ever you get cheapest!!!!
depends how u are constructing it and wot for. if its for a cheap mod to a car, then cheapest is ok, if u wack it u can bend it back! pop rivet together stuff... if you are on about a 6mm plate or something for a sump guard, then also cheapest would be ok... or one grade up.... if u explain the situation to a supplier they will spec it for you. aly suppliers have many grades, and happy to help you out! if they arent then they are poo.!! |
