Electronic remote gear change
In early stages of designing/building a mid-engine, transaxled car.
How to connect gear stick and gearbox? Rods - complex and sticky; cables - simple but unreliable. Why not 'change by wire'? Joystick for the driver, solenoids to move the selector levers? Zero feedback, but otherwise is this do-able? Has it ever been done? Comments please! John |

Nearly every FSAE team has ran some sort of pneumatic or electric solenoid operated gearshift at some stage. Drag bikes run pneumatic shifters too. Ultra fast and (usually) idiot proof.

I just LOVE the iluminated on-wheel instrumentation, the multiple function 'Fingur-trol' switches and convenient 'Mount-NE-Ware' bracketing.
We are unworthy, even as idiots. |

Its a little more complicated than a rod or cable because of the feedback issue. It needs to confirm its in gear before it puts power back on and a number of other things electronically. The timing circuits and programming get complex fast. And thats just dealing with a bike motor and tranny meant to be shifted sequentially
