Medicals & colour vision

My son's GP has just refused to sign the licence medical declaration because he cannot pass the doctor's colour blindness tests using the book of pictures composed of many coloured dots. The MSA form only says '...distinguish the primary clolours of red and green' and makes no mention of a specific test to be used. Before I call Colnbrook for advice, has anyone any experiences in this area please?

greenamex2 should be qualifying in the top 10 on the grid
I have the same problem, don't worry about it.

They'll make you go to your local circuit and check that you can tell the difference between red, green and yellow flags.

I know someone who had the same problem and he had to go to MSA house where they tested him on the flags.

At what level did he fail?

My GP used the 'coloured dots' test and I falied the hardest, indicating that I have the mildest form of colour blindness. However, he then decided that since I could probably tell the difference between tarmac and grass I'd be ok

(no comments about my driving please!!!!!!)

My GP used the 'book of dots' as well. No problem with that. My recently diagnosed diabetes has really screwed things up though

Thanks to all; MSA just confirmed that the ARDS instructor can do a check that he can see the difference between red and green flags. Which we know will be OK as he's always obeyed the flags at speed events :-)
JLD - you have my sympathy; is there a way back for you, once it's fully controlled?

One trick, the number that you are supposed to see is written on the outside of the piece of card!

mine was referred to hemmaroid house too - its not a serious issue as long as you can tell the flags apart. What the GP should have done is contact the MSA and ask them what is and isn't passable. Its not a problem

once it's under control and stable it is a distinct possibility.

I'm sure that on the form is said "Is colour vision normal".

The blue book says one thing, the form says another, because as you point out, the blue book asks that you should be distiguish between red and green flags. Red/Green colour blindness is the most common according to my doctor (who himself is mildly red/green colourblind).

Not reading the "standard" squiggles is therefore not normal...

Still, the doc should have signed it and referred it to the MSA
