Did teams other than Ferrari do the formation finishes?
I'm just wondering, I haven't been following F1 for that long (compared to some) but I was wondering if McLaren or Williams ever had their cars catch up to each other so that they'd finish side by side like Ferrari does.
I can't remember Williams ever doing it with Jacques and Damon.. but did McLaren ever do it? To me it makes somewhat of a mockery of the sport...I can't ever remember teammates not racing each other to the finish in any other series with any other cars than the Ferrari's in F1. But, please do prove me wrong! |

Quite common at long distance races like Le Mans, not sure who was first - maybe the Ford GT40 Mk II 1-2 Photo Finish at Le Mans (1966?). Lot's of other examples, but maybe the historic forum is the place for those.

Hill and Coulthard on at least one occasion. Irvine and Salo at Hockenheim 99. Berger and Senna Japan 91.

Australian's will remember the Ford Falcon GTHO 1-2 formation victories in the 1970's.

What about Spa '98 also? Team orders prevented any "racing" between Damon and Rafe so that could be seen as a formation finish. Last edited by Mr V; 19 Sep 2002 at 10:55. |

That's because they were even more dominant then Ferrari
I've got to say though, I miss the Super Touring days in Australia, it's a shame it all ended up as it did... |

Thanks guys! I didn't think it was very common, and it doesn't seem to be. Personally I dont like it, and it makes me think 'why am I paying so much money when you guys aren't even going to race to the finish'... but that's F1.

I think the Mercedes domination was the best example in F1, when they used to finish first to fourth with monotonous regularity. It was always believed that Fangio allowed Moss to win the British GP althou, gentleman that fangio is, he has never admitted that, preferring to keep alive the story that Moss was the better driver on that day. This Mercedes domination would make Ferrari's current domination pale in comparison, they were that much better than their rivals. Also, 4 Mercedes cars finishing in formation was quite demoralising for the rival teams.
