F1 2008 Round 16 - Japanese Grand Prix - 10th-12th October 2008

The 2008 Japanese Grand Prix is the sixteenth race of the 2008 Formula One season. It will be held on the 10th, 11th and 12th October at the recently revised Fuji Speedway, Oyama, Shizuoka. For 20 years the Japanese Grand Prix was held at Suzuka, but in 2007 it returned to Fuji for the first time since 1977.

In 2007, the Pole position, the fastest lap and the race itself were all won by Lewis Hamilton, who extended his lead in the championship to 12 points with 2 races remaining. Fernando Alonso won the 2006 race, almost guaranteeing him the World Championship for that year.

Two other 2008 drivers have won the Japanese Grand Prix. Kimi Räikkönen won the 2005 event driving for McLaren, while Rubens Barrichello won in 2003 to secure team-mate Michael Schumacher the World Title.

The World Championship has been won several times in Japan, with winners James Hunt at the 1976 Japanese Grand Prix; Nelson Piquet in 1987; Ayrton Senna in 1988, 1990 and 1991; Alain Prost in 1989; Damon Hill in 1996; Mika Häkkinen in 1998 and 1999; and Michael Schumacher in 2000 and 2003.

The Grand Prix will see the debut of Bridgestone's Green Striped grooved tyres as part of the FIA's Make Cars Green campaign, an initiative demonstrating that Formula One’s teams and partners are backing the Make Cars Green campaign’s goal to reduce the impact of motoring on the environment.

I don't know what to make of this circuit yet. Due to the rain last year, the jury is still out on it. Last year's race was a bit of an epic, wasn't it? Hopefully there won't be such prolonged tooling around behind the safety car.

Green-grooved tyres...something tells me that needs extra paint, which has to be produced and that is not done in a "green" way :-)

Looking at patterns from last year and this year I think Hamilton is going to have a bad race (ex last year canada, hungary - won, this year - big problems in both)

Nice work Cougar, although [pedant]Kovalainen finished second last year, not Alonso. [/pedant]

Here's hoping for a race with similar conditions to last year. Actually, maybe slightly less severe lest we start under safety car conditions.

Well, these days, it doesn't take much rain for the race to be started under SC: Spa 1997 began the slippery slope. I totally agree about less severe conditions though, given I really do not want to watch great swaths of the race being run under SC. I still think they should've red-flagged the thing last year if they figured it so undriveable. It is just a bit daft running SC for so long, IMO (either that or it didn't actually run as long as I seem to remember).

Beyond that, well, I'm just wanting a Ferrari 1-2 with a Mclaren double-DNF. Some harmless way for them to score no points would do nicely. A terrific race thrown into the bargain would be most magnificent, of course.

Glock set a monster time in FP2, he was probably quite light but that is still an amazing time especially his sector 2 and sector 3.

Such a waste of racing time when you think about it. A few laps to clear the track would've been needed in any situation, but we lose too much racing due to excessive TV-oriented use of the safety car. At least it hasn't gone as far as the DTM and its support races, which have a set time limit which continues during a red flag

Anyone but Hamilton in the top 8 and I'll be happy...personally would love neither Hamilton or Massa to win the championship. A BMW driver would be appropriate.

Would you offer an explanation on why you think either Kubica or Heidfeld are more appropriate to win the WDC?
