specials

I'm working on a project on unique competition cars - specials, any discipline, must be british based. Any ideas?
The cars must be unique and interesting.

What do you mean by British based? The example I'm thinking of in rallying, is Andrew Burton's Peugeot 306 Cosworth. Now a Peugeot isn't a British car, but I assume Cosworth conversion was.

Andrew Burtons car is 1 I would like to see. His other car was a Alfasud coupe fitted with a Ferrari v8.

So that Alfasud Sprint was his? I didn't know that - thanks for the info. I'd heard about the car, but didn't know who ran it.

Was'nt it fitted with a 6R4 V64 engine first, and besides that it is totaly space framed like the old 205T16, the only thing you can link this with France is the shape of the body shell.

Same goes for will Gollops Peugeot 306 rallycross car another interesting car with a lot of potential, and British.

I think both of these cars were featured in Cars and Car Conversions a few years back.

Another rallycross car I'm affraid, but John Cross had built and was running a 4 wheel drive turbo cosworth Fiesta in the mid ninties. It was a bit of a tool, mostly running cossy bits I think.
He spent a lot of his time running in europe, I had a chat with him I think in 95 at Valkensvard in Holland, nice chap.

John Cross Fiesta wasnt unique though. Former British Rallycross champ Steve Mundy had one with same spec, and Belgian Jos Sterkens had an identical one.

Will Gollops new Ford Focus is unique at moment and built in GB with 650bhp zetec engine, As was John Welchs Vauxhall Astra supercar in the early nineties.

Another picture of Andy Burtons car.

Originally it was classified as a Peugeot 306R4. I remember him taking part in the Mid Wales Stages in 1997 and it was called this. (Still got the results somewhere, we were in the Historic event in a 998cc Mini Cooper).

Current car spec is I.T.C Cosworth V6 2500cc 24 valve engine which can run at up to 12,000RPM 4WD, 7 spd sequential gearbox.

There is a site set up by a fan HERE

Not sure if that is John Welch's actual car, but it is certainly one of the 4WD Astra's that Vauxhall built.

I believe they only built a couple of these, one of which was sold to John Welch, Vauxhall Heritage Centre displayed one of these at the Vauxhall show at Billing Aquadrome in the summer

Isn't they making Peugeots in Britain? In the old Rootes factories?

Yes - my 405 was built there. Currently the factory, at Ryton-on-Dunsmore, is building the 206.

There is a 4x4 Corsa rally car knocking around somewhere, if I remember an Irish guy built it to see if it could be done and what it would be like.

If you look down the event results for 2002 at http://www.britishrally.co.uk/results/index.asp you'll see some more RWD versions of FWD cars being rallied

This is the actual John Welch car:

The car in M Coupe's photo looks as if it's the one of the other cars (anyone know how many there actually were?)

Rallycross has produced some incredible 'one-offs'- Terry Briggs' mid -engined spaceframe Audi TT from 2001 comes to mind- mid-engined, (using I believe a Nissan 2-litre turbo.....) or a personal favourite, John Sampson's rwd V8 -powered Rover 200 from a few years back

There were 2, first one was a Opel Kadett, then the Vauxhall Astra, the pics you have KA are the Kadett. British built but driven by Norwegian Arild Martinsen was the brutal BMW M3 Xtrac, 900bhp try an find a pic. Sampson's Rover was a cracker, had a TR8 engine.

I no Welchy used parts off the Kadett to build the Astra. Then when he quit rallycross it was bought by Swede Tommy Kristofferson so he could put the xtrac equipment on his Audi Quattro. John Sampsons trying to sell his Rover at present, same with Briggs and his TT. Last thing I heard about Martinsens M3 it was being used for hill climbs. Best way to find info on these cars, www.rallycrossuk.com or european website www.rallycross.de.
