BTCC Race-car Replica
Have you ever built a road-going BTCC SuperTouring replica?
Or have you ever considered it? I am interested in hearing from anyone who has. Also, where do the replica promotional vehicles go that the car companies build and are often seen at car shows and races. Any ideas, or do you know someone who has bought one? |

Are you talking about a Supertouring INSPIRED or EXACT Supertouring replica?
Since '96, I have been slowing trying to turn my '89 740 wagon into a BTCC inspired Supertouring replica. Actually it will be a Class 2 machine, pre-1993.5 rules since I can legitimately save on the front spoiler--they weren't allowed before 1993.5! Unfortunately, my budget is extremely small. Right now, it has a set of nice wheel covers--alloy wheel lookalikes. It has a bunch of "sponsor" stickers. My sponsor scheme was inspired by the '93 BMW Fina paint scheme and MB DTM scheme. I'll try and get you a picture when I can if you like. Over the years, I have seen a very nicely done Dodge Stratus, Honda Civic, Honda Accord, Audi A4, Volvo 850, Volvo S40 and Toyota Camry done up in Supertouring scheme. Here is an extremely good Volvo S40. Same paint scheme as the factory S40s, only with different sponsors. http://www.classiccats.cc/ What car do you drive? Are you interested in building one? Here's a showcar, 406 prepared by the MSD team. And it was up for sale. It's been resold a few times I think.
http://tentenths.com/forum/showthrea...threadid=22864 Here's an Accord http://www.geocities.com/gazmaster/page5.html Renault Laguna http://www.maxituning.ch/renault_laguna.htm Dodge Stratus http://www.stratusphere.org/allrides/maxstratus.jpg Oh yeah, and recently in order to complement my car/"sponsors", I've been working on a team denim shirt, jacket and new polo shirt! WOW! Did you happen to have these links lying around?
My car? VW Golf 1.9 TDi, slow as anything! I used to have a Vectra 2.5 V6 Sri previously, but it was a company car and had to go back when I changed jobs. I cried that day. No, not intending to build one, just thought it would be another FUN item for my Web site. However, with the thread being moved here I do not think I will get many more posts! I would love a photo of you Volvo, by the way. |

The Accord and Renault were supplied by fellow forum members. I ran into the Dodge and Volvo earlier.
PS: Several years back, I wrote an article on how to build your own ST lookalike. I was hoping to put together a website/registry for ST lookalike owners. Anyways, I could supply that article to you--provided you acknowledge my copyright--for your website? Oh yeah, don't forget the following links where you can buy REAL ST cars--provided you have 30K+ US to spend!! It's definitely amusing to link the site to: http://www.formulasaloons.com/htm/sale.htm http://www.ntcc.nu/tilsalgs.shtml Last edited by kmchow; 4 Aug 2002 at 22:23. |

Here's another brilliant lookalike.
It's on eBay at the moment. There was also a Renault Laguna in Max Power a few years back that was more or less a touring car!!! It had almost all the bits you'd find in a ST. Last edited by touringlegend; 5 Aug 2002 at 09:05. |

I saw the Cavalier on EBAY and I have emailed the seller to see if I can get more info on it and if I can post the pictures to my site. Do you still have the Max Power article? I would expect that there have been several in Max Power over the years, I remember seeing a few when browsing in WHSmiths.
KMCHOW, I would be interested in the article, and will give you full credit if I put it on the site. In-fact, the whole "replica car" idea wasn't even mine, someone mailed me with it so I cannot even take credit for that. |

Yep, here is a pic of the Laguna from Max Power. If you though it looked wicked from the outside, you should see the inside!!

Isn't this the 3.9 litre Rover V8-powered Rear wheel drive Laguna as seen on Dave Walker's page in Cars and Car Conversions magazine last month?
I remember it being featured in 'Street Machine' magazine too. The modifications are about five years old aren't they? I seem to remember thinking at the time that it was quite a current car to be completely re-engineering just for the road! Last edited by Sparky; 5 Aug 2002 at 22:30. |

Oh, better add that this article is 3 years old so maybe a few things have been swapped since.

At least Dave Walker had the decency to say that the car didn't actually run I assume that the Max Power boys used a little artistic licence.

On ebay?? Presently??? That's totally cool!
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.d...tem=1755371820 I wonder how much he is his reserve. Not that I could afford it... Hey Supertouring, let me update the article for you. It was written back in '97/'98. Some of the links are dead. Last edited by kmchow; 6 Aug 2002 at 19:43. |

Whoa, those cars look pretty dreamy, but the front suspension has been removed? Doesn't that mean the car isn't driveable anymore? If so, you have to add back the front suspension, which means you have to get smaller wheels?

yeah, sounds like a bit of work is needed on them, but im sure standard Vectras will fit 17inch wheels without any problem. dunno why they had to remove the suspension, maybe the racing wheels are too wide or something ???

I remember looking closely at one of these at a BTTC round at Snetterton - probably '96 or '97. There is no suspension, steering or drivetrain. Huge brake discs but no calipers. No engine or gearbox, wiring or fuel system... even the exhaust 'system' was a foot long piece of 4" pipe bolted under the spare wheel well! The cage, seat, dash and controls are all mock ups - not functional in the slightest. It never was, and never will be 'driveable'. Sorry guys! |

So why would anyone buy them? I wonder what they did with the cars? A project car--to build and put back on the road? Put on the racetrack? Interesting...

Hardly, the "Astra Coupe 888" has a rear wing and some slightly flared wheel arches, and of course it is blue. www.tripleeight.co.uk should have some pictures of it.
100 "888" special editions were built to commemorate Vauxhalls dominance last year, I have heard now that we have one less of the 888's, one was written off. |

Not a bad looking Astra. I think alll manufacturers should building ST or touring car lookalikes. AFAIK, only Vauxhall in recent memory, has created such vehicles? I think Volvo is the other make with their 850 back in Australia? I think this is a real attempt to practice the "Win on Sunday, sell on Monday" phrase you often hear.

There is the Renault Laguna Airflow special edition from the end of 1994 that was going around.
