Al Unser Jr. Back at Indy

Quite a field shaping up with Michael Andretti, Eddie Cheever and now L'il Al.

Agreed, I don't know what he can gain from returning.

I'd just like to know what's so wrong about a driver wanting to return to a track, and a race, that they love? Nearly the exact type of, to be frank, BS were clogging up forums last year when Kenny Brack announced he'd return to Indy, and to hear it all over again is getting rather tiring and ridiculous.

I was fine with Brack returning, so that is irrelevant.

Is it difficult to presume that maybe guys like this just want to run the Indianapolis 500?

I must agree with rustyfan and indycool for once. The pleasure of driving and the name will also create a buzz. It will also be great to see who will be the best of the long-time friends and rivals.

That's what he wants to do. I talked to Al at the test at Homestead and he has been working out and getting in shape because he feels he is too young to not compete in the Indy 500 ! Nice to have him back !

Quite frankly, I am stoked to see him back, but for personal reasons. I fell in love with open wheel when my dad took me to the races when Miami had a temp street track (Tamiami). For some unkown reason I picked him to cheer on, so seeing him in Indy is really like to quote the country song "like comming home"

Well, I like Little Al as much as anyone.

I just don't want to see him embarrass himself, and this is a situation where there is potential over that happening.

But it must be what he wants and I wish him luck all the same!

Wish Al all the the best.

With Andretti, Cheever and now Al returning to the 500, whose next AJ Foyt.

remember last time Al was at Indy he was with a single car team who wasn't used to the IRL car with a chevy engine. I don't think we really saw what he was capable of then.

How old was Luyendick when he won his 2nd Indy500?
Certailnly wasn't a boy.
I mean, Indy has often seen the participation of elder drivers, and sometimes they did a great job.
Thus no scandal at all if Al joins the club

Luyendyk was 43 at the time of his second Indy Win
Oldest winner is Al Unser Sr. 5 days short of his 48th birthday in 1987
Al Jr. will be 44 this year during the race.

The IndyCar.com article on this includes something that caught my eye:
Quote:
He didn't discount competing in the IndyCar Series beyond Indianapolis or his son, Al, putting together a program for May.
Interesting
