Gollops Metro Bi-turbo V Mansell Williams Fw14
I was going through my old mags when I came across this test in January 1993 "Fast Car" mag of Mansells 1992 F1 Williams 3.5l Renault V's Will Gollops Metro 6R4 2.3 V6 bi-turbo of 1992. The Rallycross car of the similar power output 750bhp but a weight that is 560 odd kilos higher compares well up to 100mph.

Tests were done with schanches and alamakis RS200 and 205 t16 aswell which proved that a rallycross car was much quicker of the mark than a formula 1 car. And that is without traction control and launch control that is allowed on a formula 1 car, not to mention the softer tyres which give the f1 cars a bigger advantage. The torque in a rallycros car is far superior to that in a formula 1 therefore making a rallycross car much better under acceleration. Gollops car was never the fastest car off the line as well.

Here is a link to a spreadsheet i compiled comparing all rallycross cars based on the 2002 season. It contains power output, torque, drive and acceleration. Makes interesting reading....also has stats about the supernational cars from sweden & Norway

Peter S that's a great list you have. One question why do so many cars only have 4 speed gearboxes?

I think the biggest shame about Divison 2 in European Championship is that it is only Group N. It would be better if it was Group A based.

At the Punchestown rallysprint this year, Colin McRae drove Carnegie's Focus as 00 and said it was the fastest thing to accelerate he'd ever driven. And didn't McRae drive a Jordan in 1995. Just proves that level of power is still out there.

I think they only have four speed boxes as the circuits dont really extend to them needing six, as they use shorter ratios. After all in rallycross it is all about short bursts from corner to corner, so it is more the torque of the car (and acceleration) that matters, not top speed. The circuits used in europe are a lot slower than used in in England. Therefore that would be quite a lot of gear changing wouldnt it.

Regarding division 2, for 2003 new rules are enforced with a new division 1a category in europe. this means there will be three classes
Division 1 Division 1a Division 2 Division 1a is identical to division 1, but only 2 wheeled drive cars are allowed, up to 1600cc a bit like our old formula c, but with newer cars. |

May i ask what is not English that you would like to see on the website?
When the English language is selected there is nothing that is not in bi language (Dutch and English) apart from the news section, where all Dutch and Belgium news is in the Dutch language. All news regarding other championships is in english, including european, british, irish, estonian etc. The aim is to provide up to date rallycross information for all fans from around the whole of europe, with full results and reports from every race that takes place. It is done for the love of the sport, to promote rallycross in the best way possible. There is not another site on the internet that can offer this. |

The things I would like to see is a full english section I found it hard to read and also the pictures were very small.
The Pictures section menu is entirely in dutch, so is the forum section and most of the news, the ads page as well. It would be a lot better if it had a complete english section. |

Gollops 306 was later tested by CCC and Max Power and gave about the same times, probably a bit better... The only reason why an F1 is not that much quicker, given the higher power and much lower weight is the very long 1st gear, it will probably do 0-100 mp/h in one gear! so up to 60 mp/h the optimum power band is not even reached... I think torque for a Rallycross is only half the story for acceleration from standstill, but vital for corner to corner burtsts! But the ALS is even more importend as it gives instant power and superb throttle respons... I Did have a test by Echappement of Michel Liger's ZX in a multiple car sprint. It did beat an F3000 up to about 400 m or so... Too bad I've lost it... I believe that if the post group B rules didn't changed, Martin's second Escort RS2000 could be the fastest accelerating Rallycross car ever if he could sorted it... |
