LMP1 Privateer entries by 2017-18, your prediction?
Based on your research/estimation/guess, which LMP1 privateer teams do you actually think will be on the grid in next two seasons time (both 2017/2018 or just either of them). No hopes, but your realistic prediction. The list comprises of all teams that have publicly shown at least some interest since the new regulations came in the force, and quite few of them have already in 99,9% certainty collapsed for good ages ago, but here they are in the list regardless. What do you think?

Rebellion and ByKolles will probably still be there, I have a hunch Strakka might just make it. Don't expect any others.

Onroak has basically been going on and off about this thing for years, but now acknowledging their insisting of having a "manufacturer" partner + branding before packing their suitcases, and at the same time seeing Nissan-Cosworth shopping in for teams, I think the two will align sooner or later.
SMP will have billion spare LMP2 chassis laying around doing nothing, and ultimately they will realize it's time to switch boats. When the money drains are still functioning... Plus the Swiss and the funky businessman's team. I don't believe in others sadly, not really even Manor, though would love to be proven wrong |

at 50% I think there will be some new private lmp1 cars, just because teams like SMP, strakka and oak will try to recycle their grandfathered lmp2 coupè, converting them in lmp1; but at 50% I fear that none really will care and simply will switch to new cheaper lmp2 chassis after 2017.

Oak is in the buddy circle of new spec LMP2 though, so they don't really need to recycle anything, besides I think they have the LMP1 design ready anyway if they got that partner. |

lmp2 HPD ligier chassis + wider rear wing + new suspensions + AER = new oak lmp1
of course, I am not an engineer, but I guess is simpler and cheaper to customize an already developed platform than project and build a new one from 0. |

I think just one additional team to what we have now. My guess is Strakka, Rebellion and Kolles. Hope more join but that's all I see for now.

Strakka remains hopeful:
http://sportscar365.com/lemans/wec/s...ateer-project/ If not 2017, then maybe 2018. Does this make we want to vote them after all? No, I'm still very skeptical, but as I've said before, I'd love to be proven wrong here. Anyway there was an interesting, very logical bit I hadn't thought too much: “We have to respect as well the message that’s trying to be put out. They want the hybrid cars to be perceived as having high fuel efficiency and so on, and they have. So therefore we can’t certainly go further into a race than a hybrid car because that creates the wrong message." |

don't want to be harsh, but strakka spent a whole year to set up their dome, dropping everything just after 3 races then...
let's say that they are better as racing team than engineering group |

I'm not quite sure why they insist on having their own (co-)designs rather than contacting Oak or HPD or Oreca or whomever for customer car. It's not like they've had issues in doing such in LMP2, aside from the said Dome.

Perhaps they like the challenge of building their own car. Interesting to see in that article that they want to continue with the Dome in 2018 and Rebellion wants to continue with their chassis as well.

Maybe. It's respectable in any case.
Anyway, if they go ahead and if the old monocoque design gets green light, I don't think Dome itself will have anything to do with anything here anymore, and the chassis will probably get rebranded as, I don't know, Strakka 01 or something like that... |

Like the point I was making in the DPi thread, the p2-p1 step can be done and I expect the new p2's being close to the current p1's to make that less of a hassle for teams looking to get cars. Cars that could be based on the one's they're running next year. Or at least with some familiarity (constructor).

reliability issues have been so far their only serious rivals in grid... About who made who, surely oreca was already developing the oreca 05 program before rebellion knocked to their door... they simply updated the car for lmp1 specs and then released the 05 one season later. Of course the r-one is more expensive than the 05, but most of these extra costs come from drivetrain I guess. |

Like carbon is saying, there's a list of similarities. Monocoque(?) maybe being the main one. I think this could be looked at as an example for current p2 teams looking for a car to run in p1.
