ELMS 2017
Thought it's time to give the ELMS 2017 related news etc. its own home.
Calendar: Imola gone for the 2017 calendar, replaced by Monza. Remains 6 round, Silverstone, Monza, Zeltweg, Paul Ricard, Spa, Portimao (replacing Estoril) (SC365 link)
The Renault Sport Trophy, Formula Renault and GT3 Le Mans Cup support package is also retained unchanged for 2017. DSC late August 2017 entry speculations Current (2016-) P2s will receive grandfathering to race next to the 2017 P2 with their own trophy. Quote:

So we'll see a(t least one) Dallara LMP2 in ELMS as well.

I would say the upside of owning non-Oreca, non-Onroak, is that you are more likely to receive the LM invite. Though perhaps not yet immediately next year as the grandfathering phase is still on and the field won't look quite as generic yet with the old warhorses there

Not sure who will run a 2016-spec car in ELMS next year, but they’re kind of by definition a second-tier operation as they effectively aren’t racing for the overall win except under the very unusual circumstances. |

I don't think they're going to invite any old cars.

Agreed. I expect a flurry of (prototype) announcements in the coming months and over the winter.
The full season entry is limited btw to 40 cars for 'customer service*' reasons... (*ACO style) |

seems like United is considering not only tackling the Le Mans 24, but also the ELMS with a new Ligier (retaining their P3 programme!)

It's a struggle to do that as the majority of the grid is funded by Ams who have a career elsewhere. The Pros that do run in ELMS also tend to run in WEC and Blancpain, so calender clashes are a problem.
In an ideal world I'd love more ELMS races (it might be my favourite series now days, it's hard to decide!), but I'd be worried about the impact on the teams. |

Sounds like an Oreca or a Ligier. Could the undisclosed gentleman driver be one of his current SMP teammates (as SMP's role as constructor is coming to an end)?

Great to see Rubens lining up for Le Mans and maybe some ELMS races. Will Lammers still be competitive at 60/61 in a prototype?

Almost 30 years after his overall victory! How long has it been since he last competed in the 24H, 10 years or so? (Jan ran in the Road to LM support race last year in a P3 but not with Van Eerd).
Davytec's Davy Lemmens used to be the Racing For Holland's crew chief, he and Lammers know each other pretty well. I'm wondering how Barrichello got involved (as the initial idea was to have Jos Verstappen in the car with Lammers and Van Eerd (but Verstappen gave priority to overseeing his son's F1 career) and participate in this year's race). |

5 years, last time I remember seeing Jan on the LM entry list was 2011 in the Hope Racing hybrid Oreca.

A non-Ligier joins the LMP3 field. Hard to mistake this for anything else...

Is there any point to have a GTE am category in this series anymore?

Why wouldn't there be a point to the GTE Am class in ELMS? There's more than enough entries, and they're pretty established names, and some long time series supporters. JMW, Proton, Aston Martin, AF Corse. Dropping GTE-Am won't move these teams to WEC, it'll just move them to Blancpain or national series.
ELMS is meant to house more Am teams than Pro teams, hence why there is no LMP1 or GTE-Pro. So if you remove GTE-Am then you end up with a multi-class series with no GT class, that's meant to provide entries for Le Mans, which doesn't make any sense. From the drivers side it works too. It's a step between national series and world series. Without GTE-Am, it'd force drivers to move to Blancpain before they can get a shot at WEC. Blancpain doesn't have prototypes, so there's not as much learning that can be taken from it. Without GTE-Am, it means that a GTE drivers first experience of being on track with an LMP will be in FIA WEC, with the LMP2 hybrids. Giving experience with LMP2s first is a far better idea, especially for Am drivers. Of course this only applies to drivers in Europe. But it probably isn't a great idea to tell every driver in the European sportscar market to go through IMSA and move to the states to get a stepping stone from National to GTE-Pro. |

Formula Racing won’t be back in ELMS in 2017. They raced in GTE-Am in the series the last few years. Short DSC article here.

As expected, Jota won't be back this year as Dolan takes a step back:
