EMKA Aston Martin: Thoughts and info

Any info on this one ?

Last edited by chunterer; 8 Feb 2011 at 15:50. Reason: Until specific chassis info is discussed this, like the Nimrod thread is better off in Motorsport History

Personally it was one of the more attractive Group C cars raced certainly in terms of the shape and flow.

Arguably better looking than it's Nimrod cousin which was a fine beast in itself.

Yes, it was a car I always liked.

The EMKA first appeared in 1983, raced a couple of times, then disappeared until 1985 when it came back with revised bodywork and Dow Corning sponsorship- this was the year when Tiff Needell famously led Le Mans for a few laps, after some clever thinking by the team on fuel strategy early in the race

Were there actually two EMKA chassis? The EMKA was seen in some of the early historic Group C races, and I'm sure I've seen two cars in the paddock at Donington, one in the 1983 red 'Hawaiian Tropic' colours, and one in the Dow Corning paintscheme from 1985

There might well have been 2 cars, we'll have to see what we can dig up!

Was the Michael Cane behind this project the same guy who jointly set up Cane Cordy Motorsport much later on?

Interesting changes in direction if it was.

Sorry, It's the best photo I can come up with. I might be able to find programme for this Silverstone meeting. I might have one for Le Mans but no pics.

Hi, the 2nd car was built after the racing career was done.

Check out www.groupcltd.co.uk who have both cars in their for sale section, complete with brief histories.

Thanks- so the red car is a re-creation built in 1989 out of a combination of original parts from the 1983-spec of the car and spare parts from the 1985 version

Slightly off-topic, they've got some very nice stuff in stock!

1985 Silverstone 1000km- the first sportscar race I ever went to! Patrese's Lancia on pole, Rothmans-Porsche win, and Jonathan Palmer/Jan Lammers in the Richard Lloyd Canon 956 leading early in the race until losing a couple of laps when a front wheel fell off, before recovering to 5th, and breaking the lap record

This was the debut of the 1985 version of the EMKA in the Dow Corning colours, and it was a DNF. Next race would be Le Mans, where things went a lot better!

When O'Rourke ran the EMKA McLaren with which he and Sugden won the British GT championship in 98 and finished 4th overall at LM it was Michael Cane who was team Manager for the car, and in 1999

EMKA Aston Martin

I own the so called Dow Corning car now (the white one), which is the original EMKA car.
Chassis plate reads C84/1
we will return it to Group C racing in 2012

The red car, built up later from spares is a bit of a mongrel as far as I know.
Early bodywork (1983) but later 1984 rear suspension.

ON SEEING THE ORIGINAL RED VIRGIN CAR IN THE SCRUTINY BAY AT SILVERSTONE, I REMARKED TO ONE OF THE TEAM HOW SIMILAR THE SHAPE WAS TO THE C100 . HE WAS NOT AMUSED , LEN BAILEY DREW BOTH AND THERE WERE DEFINITE SIMILARITIES IN THE BODYSHAPE.

Group C Emka

A bit late in the day, but having just signed up, thought I'd mention that I used to own both of these EMKAs, and raced the Dow Corning car a few times. I also owned and raced the Bovis Nimrod, which was a much more forgiving car to drive, and certainly more manageable than the EMKA, which really struggled with chronic understeer. Admittedly, that was probably down to my set up, tyres etc.

I hope the new owner has a lot of fun in the car and it will be great to see it out again.

EMKA contact

Does anyone know if there are any ex EMKA staff around from the 1980/90 period? I am trying to do a bit of research into one of their cars......

Didn’t a historic tenths member own the C84 and have it restored? If I’m not wrong on that he may know more.... I can pm his user name if you need.
