What do you propose then??
MONZA...the fastest circuit on the current F1 calendar. The temple of speed and a wonderful F1 history.
BUT...instead on praise being heaped upon the last few of the superfast circuits, critism were thrown at the track in recent years. The most upon those 2 lousy chicanes being dangerous, unfair, stupid... Drivers ALL think the chicanes su*k. So do Bernie, and so do the fans. So what do you propose for a change? Personally, i would like to see the first two chicanes gone for good, but knowing the dangerous speeds that the cars would go to if the 2 chicanes are replaced by a long curve(though it'd be cool to watch), i think its a big impossibility. But the chicanes are in itself a huge danger. From 350km/h to 80km/h...imagine a smashup between a braking car and one with brake failure...Irvine had shivered at the thought! So what i think should be done to change the circuit without losing its appeal to racing and history... At Prima Variante, replace it with a nurburgring-sheild curve (a much faster chicane without the extreme braking involved) or a slightly slower and longer chicane like Spa's Les Fa**#** (the one before stavelot) and bring the entry point forward by 100m. Then...get rid of Seconda variante totally, which means an unterrupted run from the exit of prima to Lesmo through a slightly repositioned curva biassono... This way, Monza would not be held by ugly and pathetically slow chicanes, but maintain it's safety and the overall speed being kept in check... How about you? I'd like to see the first two chicanes gone completely and see the Curva grande restored to its former glory.
Just a thought, how fast would they get up to without them? |

Well, why can't we go back to the pre-2000 first chicane - that was actually half decent as far as chicanes go...

i think all the chicanes of all the race circuit are ok provided all the drivers drive responsibly.

I never saw the point in changing either of those chicanes in the first place. If anything last years tragedy, although caused by a sequence of circumstance, happened because they changed the flow of the course.
I say go back to the pre-1972 Monza. Bring back slipstreaming!! |

I fourth it.
The problem is that that part of the track cannot really be altered without veering off to somewhere where the track has never gone before, which may include placing it where the banking currently is, amd i would fly all the way to Italy and chain myself to the banking before that could knock it down, so the pre 2000 chicane is really the only workable solution. Also, i don't know how much planning went into the new chicane for 2000, at the World Superbikes a few months before they used the 1999 chicanes and there was no hint of a corner change. Why did they alter the track anyway. |

I think its a damn shame that Monza has been changed so much, the old curve-grande was a much deeper corner, and had much more character, as well as being banked.
I think if the first chicane wasn't there, the cars would be doing 220mph around curve grande. |

Just change to a rolling start. The chicanes are dangerous during the first lap because they are all close toghether.

If reinstating the Curve Grande is impossible then widening out the chicane to make it more of a "s" curve would be appropriate. With the current carbon brakes there is little outbraking to be done, why not reward the team or driver who can get his car balanced to take a high speed "s" curve faster than his competitors. A corner with the similar radii (or slightly tighter) to Eau Rouge minus the elevation change would generate enough tire scrub to slow the cars down from top speed through there.
I guess the chicanes were added at the FIA's insistence. These are not club racers or junior racers that have not turned a wheel before, they are the best of the best and I think they are the best judge of what is a safe speed to be taken in a corner. Instead of the FIA destroying one of F1's most historic corners and circuits, why not concentrate on making the run off area safer to keep the inevitable off from becoming a mortal shunt? |

Rolling starts are already done in other forms of racing and are kind of boring. The standing start is an F1 trait and should not be changed. I really prefer the LeMans start myself.
I doubt the ol Curve Grande will ever even be considered. A nice 130kph left-right complex might be good. Throw in a hill at an apex just to add spice. Last edited by Redneck; 26 Sep 2001 at 22:29. |
