More new car woes
Autosport are reporting that Jarno Trulli has confessed that the new Toyota is eating it's rear tyres at a rate of knots (my words, not his)
What is going on with all these new cars? Sauber.."funamental" or "hiccup" problems, possibly tyre related, BAR, not fast enough, now Toyota as well..is it all tyre related, or has everybody screwed up? Only Renault at the minute are looking confident. I am aware that testing times mean nothing, but when has it been productive to publicly slate your brand new car? Sandbagging is one thing, making sponsors question why they spent their cash spending is another... |

Trulli said it reminds him of his 2001 Jordan. Apparently a new aero pack will be in place before Australia.
On another note, Honda have also been unable to cover 1,300 km, the estimated distance that an engine will have to last in 2 GP. |

Maybe everyone's just trying to not set themselves up for a fall?
Wasn't it similar to this in 1998 when the last major technical changes were put in place? Maybe it wasn't, my memory's a bit hazy. I remember Ferrari and McLaren were publicly concerned on the eve of the 2001 season, there had been a few mods to the aerodynamics for then, and they were also worried about reliability. I don't think it's anything to take too seriously just yet. |

Wasn't Gary Anderson at Jordan back in the day?
Could be his signature. |

The 2002 Williams was infamous for eating its rear tyres, which is why it was so great in qualifying over 1 lap - hence Montoya's 7/8 poles or something in that year, however in the races they faded.
I think the only hope for Toyota if their car is eating its tyres is that Michelin produce a harder compound for them until they fix the problem which is likely to be suspension related. Last edited by Sodemo; 5 Feb 2005 at 18:44. |

The teams are trying to get their excuses in early... in the case of an eventual Ferrari domination
Seriously, its just mind games between the teams. I saw a report just yesterday saying that Ralf was very pleased with the car - much better than he anticipated. |

Harder tyres is never a fix, but its a band aid for the problem. Last edited by Sodemo; 5 Feb 2005 at 19:27. |

Toyota have never had a car as good as good as the 2001 Jordan, so maybe that's a backhanded compliment from Jarno?
The really surprising thing about the car eating the rear tyres is that the tyres are Bridgestones. All the other cars that've had this problem before have been on Michelins, and a lot of people have attributed the Sauber's reported problems to their switch. |

Which tyres are they on?!!
They may well wish they were Bridgestones. Last edited by Marbot; 5 Feb 2005 at 19:49. |

I'd be surprised if a Gascoyne design "ate rear tyres", to be quite honest. His cars are usually gentle on tyres.

Ralf Schumacher's quoted as saying the Toyota is better than expected.
It's all kidology at this time of season. Melbourne has the answers. |

I'm just waiting for Renault,Mclaren and Williams to come up with a "Fundamental Flaw" so that when the're 2 seconds behind Ferrari in Melbourne it won't feel quite so bad.

It actually sounds like it would be a very 'interesting' time to be a tech director.

Is it just that the Michelins are not coping very well with the new rules?

At least the Michelin people have the courage to stand in front of the Bridgestone steamroler.

Yes,Mclaren and Renault seem to be pretty pleased with themselves overall and seem to be the only 2 teams not to have any sort of problem. But things might turn out different next week at Jerez. |

Is Gascoyne actually a 'hands-on' aero/design man or is he more managerial?

He specialises in aero and delegates/lets others work on other areas of the car, as far as I know. I'm probably wrong.
But I guess he manages the overall thing as well. |

He's got a reputation as being the diva of the F1 technical world - throws lots of tantrums and suchlike. Earning lots of money, likes to keep his subordinates weak. Doesn't like competition within the team.

The fundamental flaw being that they aren't quick enough! Puts me in mind of Ron's "performance deficit" - I love that, lmao.
